That was the end for Aunt Harriet, but just maybe, her baby had a chance. That same day the Schreave family, were riding down the hill with little Elias on the same day. Figure 5 is a photo of my grandma in a bathing suit while on vacation in Atlantic City, NJ. The picture is dated September of 1967. She is wearing a high waist bathing suit bottom with a white stripe up the side and a scoop neck bathing top with a scalloped edge that has a daisy on each scallop. This bathing suit reveals some of her midriff, but not bearing her navel. Kennedy (2007) makes a note about bathing suit styles, “whereas the 1950’s were all about the bosoms and hips, the 1960s focused on the midriff” (p.202). High waist bathing suits were popular in the 50s; revealing part of the midriff but still keeping the navel concealed. This being the 60s and the height of the sexual revolution, the bikini had become an extremely popular swimsuit…

The story begins when the rocket has just exploded and the crew is falling through space. They have space suits on, so they can breathe and talk to one another through a radio. They estimate that they have an hour or so to speak to one another before they drift too far apart. Hollis, the main character, is falling towards the Earth, while the Captain is falling towards the moon. They are all scared and Hollis kills one man who starts screaming uncontrollably because they cannot talk to one another on the radio while he screams. As they talk, at first they try to calm each other down, but then some of them become mean. Applegate tries to hurt Hollis by saying that he destroyed his career and Hollis lashes out at Lespere when he reminisces about the fulfilling life he has had. Afterwards, Applegate apologizes to Hollis and Hollis realizes that he has led an empty life. He wishes that he could do something to make up for it by helping someone. When he falls through the Earth‘s atmosphere he burns up like a meteor and a boy in Illinois thinks he is a falling star. His mother tells him to make a wish.…

After reading Stuart Ewen’s book, All Consuming Images: The Politics of Style in Contemporary Culture, I began to realize the importance images have on our day-to-day lives. Ewen does his best to force us into thinking about the power advertisements have on us and he also goes through history explaining the evolution of style throughout culture. What I was able to gather from this book was the chance to see the things that often go unseen. We are bombarded with images that tell us how to live the best life and products that are going to change our lives for the better, but Ewen tells us to step back from all of this and admire these things a little deeper. He breaks away at how these advertisements are created and reasons for why we fall into the trap.…

World War II was a dark time for the world. Not only was an entire race being exterminated but also over 60 million people were killed in this conflict. Most of Europe has been taken over by the Nazi, the head of the Axis. The United States eventually jumped into the fight, joining the Allies, after the Pearl Harbor attack. The citizens of the US only heard stories of what was happening in Europe. They needed more visual pieces of information to explain the situation. The political cartoons from World War II use humor, empathy, and fear to sway the reader to believe the Axis is evil.…

Legends on the net by Jan Fernback, he argues that the oral cultural has been changed from past to contemporary. He says that, orality and literacy becomes less important because of human develop the cyberspace. Today, in our society people need to use internet because we are using it everywhere and it becomes part of our culture. In addition, the author says that, oral tradition has been warning for community living. Fernaback agues that, urban legend as popular cultural texts. Folklore can make the people keep up to date with their cultural values, mores, and ethos. In cyberspace, there are different kinds of stories that are not true, and that is calling “tale story or urban legend”. Urban legend can be stop social chaos by reducing social anxiety, and it can clarify people’s natural heritage and impacts on public imagination with folklore. Mass media is the best way which can circulate urban legends and folklore. Urban legend and folklores are stories which can be transmitted orally, and has impact on our societies such as tainted Halloween candy. Fernback gives example of serious urban legends. For example, A child who had been poisoned by his father on Halloween and oranges in United Kingdom had been injected with mercury, and girl in school found pin inside her peanut butter cup. It is Anonymous, which means that story tellers can tell their own story in different ways, but involves the same ideas. Moreover, in cyberspace, tales of fired rates could effect negatively in our social media. If this issue had been analyzed via e-mail or internet, people know about it so they will believe easily.
