Lessons of Life

From the time I was a young boy my best friend, confidant, and hero was my grandmother.   We went out to eat several times a week; we talked, laughed, and cried together.   It did not matter to me that such a vast number of years separated our lives.   Little did I realize that this great woman would have such a profound impact on the path which I would take in my life.   It would lead me to become a Registered Nurse like she had been.   I also began to care so deeply for the Senior Generation that I now live my live in the service of.

I recall being a fairly new nurse working in a nursing home where there seemed to be so many people and so little time.   The sights and sounds of this day are forever fixed in my memory and are easily recalled.   It seemed that the day was so busy and that I was so consumed with the tasks of the day that I did not have time for the people I was there to serve.   I recall checking out on the time clock, and then sitting down to learn about a patient that I had been caring for.   I took the opportunity, to sit at the bedside of a beautiful, and frail woman of whom I knew had Alzheimer’s, and as such I was intimately aware of the outcome and dying process associated with it.   I was however not aware of the life and legacy of this beautiful woman who was no longer able to communicate her needs, and desires or to talk of accomplishments and life experience.

Over the next several hours her life unfolded before me through the loving grace of a devoted husband, who visited daily. He shared with me a glimpse of her life, a life unlike anything that I would have imagined.   I came to understand that for many years this daughter of God had walked hand in hand with Him as a nurse serving our fellow man with Mother Teresa.   I further came to understand that Sara, as I will call her, was always looking for ways to serve others and make a difference in their lives....
