Life Through a Tunnel
Do you remember the point in your life where you no longer want to be mommy’s little sidekick? I do, and I feel that it’s a passage that you have to travel; kind of like a coming of age story and in this case through a tunnel. The short story Through the Tunnel by Doris Lessing is a coming of age story. The boy Jerry is and has always been right by his mommy’s side. But one day he decides he wants to take the walk through this coming of age tunnel and be a big boy now. The title “Through the Tunnel” means coming of age, or rebirth. In my opinion you are born twice. One of the times id your first and official birth, and the other is when you come to that age where you no longer and mommy’s little sidekick. I feel that Doris is trying to tell us that in her title, and also that everyone has to experience this rebirth and people do it in many different ways. Jerry’s way was leaving his widowed mother alone for practically the real first time, and going to the rocky unsafe beach where the edgy local boys were hanging out and practicing going under water until he finally was able to swim through the tunnel underwater. This title has to do with independence, being alone and dealing with things in your life all by yourself and not caring. And being so happy that you are finally able to be free from your mother’s life line; and experiencing the world from your own eyes.
