Life Span and Development of Diana, Princess of Wales
This paper will discuss the life and accomplishments of Diana, Princess of Wales, from a psychological standpoint. I will apply different theories of psychology to the life and behaviors as well as the personality of Diana, to better understand this beautiful, kind woman.
Diana was born on July 1, 1961, to Frances Roche and Lord Althorp, Diana’s heritage is that of royalty. Her family is descendant from the Stuart kings Charles ǁ and James ǁ, and her grandmother was a Lady in Waiting for Queen Elizabeth. While growing up she was a frequent playmate of the young Princes Andrew, Edward and her future husband Prince Charles. In 1975 Diana became Lady Diana Spencer, when her father earned the title of 8th Earl Spencer. She was educated at Riddlesworth Hall, and then went to boarding school at West Heath School and eventually finishing school at Institute Alpin Vindermanette in Switzerland, leaving Switzerland in 1980. In school she was described as shy and not very bright but excelled in sports and dance. She longed to be a professional ballerina but was told she was too tall for the profession. ("Learning To Give.org", 2011) Diana had many disappointments, including her parent’s divorce in 1969, in her childhood and this may have set the tone for the rest of her life. In writing about Diana’s life, Morton (1998) stated:
“There were many… snapshots of her childhood which crowded her memory. Her mother's tears, her father's lonely silences, the numerous nannies she resented, the endless shuttling between parents… the feelings of guilt that she hadn't been born a boy and the firmly fixed idea that somehow she was a 'nuisance' to have around.
