Life on the Farm

Life was hard on the land.

We grew up poor and insolvent.

Times were difficult. Mama and papa slaved on the land to bring forth fruit.

We thought the world was cruel.

Nothing could bring us the happiness that food, shelter, and security provide.

So one day we worked to provide daddy with a pitch and a fork.

After multiple days of labor, the kids had saved up enough to buy him a hand shovel.

Daddy was not happy with what the kids had provided.

They were given strict instructions never to hand daddy a gift again or mama would be punished.

The kids prayed to God that they would never give daddy another horrible gift.

Grandmother Ethel promised to survey each gift before daddy laid his eyes or hands on the darn thing.
