Background: There are three extant species of elephant: Elaphas maximus (Asian elephants), Loxodonta africana (African elephants), and Loxodonta cyclotis (African forest elephants). Their taxonomic hierarchy is as follows:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Proboscidea

2. Collect an image of each species – be sure to label which is which! Either paste them below, or submit them as separate files. (see full assignment instructions)

3. Looking at these pictures, can you think of any EXTINCT animal or animals that might be a close relative of modern elephants? List it/them below. If you know the scientific name (genus and species) then you can put that. If you aren’t quite sure, just give the common name.

4. Now think about EXTANT taxa. Identify 2 animals that you might expect to be the closest LIVING relative to the elephants. List it/them below. If you know the scientific name (genus and species) then you can put that. If you aren’t quite sure, just give the common name.

Possible Relative B

5. For the closest EXTANT relatives you identified in #4, what characteristic(s) of that animal or its habitat led you choose it as “probable closest relative”? (consider geographic location, size, anatomy, behavior etc). Be specific.

Elephants are intelligent, gifted, and exquisite mammals that can figure out tasks by themselves or cooperatively. In the article “Elephants Can Lend a Helping Trunk”, the passage “Elephants Know When They Need a Helping Trunk in a Cooperative Task”, and the video “Elephants Show Cooperation”, the sources all argue that elephants are very shrewd animals that are capable of completing tasks. All of the sources say that elephants are considered to be cooperative, clever, prudent, and more.…

A young Michael Byers in great detail states that “The stuffed African elephant on its circular dais in the rotunda was composed of billions of skin cells and tiny cilia, and its ivory tusks wore an unfalsifiable brown patina of age.” (73) Young Michael Byers uses very descriptive words to share his admiration with us. How amazing is what he is witnessing, the elephant is really old and the brown patina stands as proof of its age. But as an adult he merely says that “There were ten million African elephants in 1930, and that now there are only thirty-five thousand” they were once great but know they are almost gone.…

    Culling Elephants

Culling elephants is very brutal and unnecessary. However, it still remains a preferred method of handling the elephant population. If this continues, the next generation of humans may not even know what elephants look like except on the internet or in picture books. The Wildlife management often commands that sizable amounts of these animals are to be killed in one huge fight to decrease an area of more than enough elephants because of diminishing space. I will be discussing what elephants are, what they do to help the environment, the poaching of them, and the problem of poaching.…

    B. The relationship between many organisms can be traced back to a common ancestor. As time progresses organisms evolve and change from this common ancestor, making it harder to just see the relationships between organisms. There are three types of evidence that explains how organisms can be related and that it just is the organism evolving; comparative anatomy, comparative biochemistry, and comparative embryology. One of the ones I am discussing is comparative biochemistry which is when you compare organisms by the similarity of their DNA, proteins, genes, gene products and their common genetic code. DNA, RNA, the genetic code and proteins are similar in all organisms. When the genetic and molecular similarity between species is great, that means that those two species are closer to sharing a…

Elephants and armadillos are just two species out of the vast majority of existing mammals. These two share the same characteristics: warm-blooded; their young are born alive; and have lungs to breathe air. On the other hand, the two have apparent differences. The body characteristics are the most evident. An elephant’s physical characteristics consist of its enormous size, have tusks, and even a trunk. An armadillo, however, is of moderate size, has hard armor-like skin, short legs, and have claws. Also, an elephant’s diet is usually plant flood, considering that it is an herbivore, while an armadillo uses its sharp claws to dig for grubs or insects. The elephant belongs to the Proboscidea, which only contains one family of living animals, the elephants – includes three species: African Bush Elephant, African Forest Elephant, and Asian Elephant. The Proboscidea order classifies animals that feed by its trunk. The armadillo is only family in the order Cingulata, as well as a superorder Xenartha, which also includes anteaters and sloths. The…
