Professional Values and Ethics
The world may be in turmoil because many have forgotten or set aside good values and principles. Some people overlooked social responsibility that selfishness and lawlessness have become a way of life. There is a need for professional values and ethics. It is essential to achieve success. It will make a difference in the world to embrace professional values and ethics.
“Ethics in its broadest sense is that branch of philosophy concerned with the study of how people ought to act towards each other. A term designating one or more of the justified moral values that should govern the work of professionals; the moral values that actually do guide groups of professionals, whether those values are identified as (a) principles in codes of ethics promulgated by professional societies or (b) actual beliefs and conduct of professionals. Professional values include principles of obligation and rights, as well as virtues and personal moral ideals” (Audi, 2010).
Our professional values and ethics are extensions of our personal values, morals, and principles. This is our code of conduct that makes or breaks us. Professional values and ethics are not just taught, it is first caught. Our parents and family is our first foundation. They are the main source of why we act and reason the way we do. Their morals and values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, and caring shape us.
Our teachers and mentors are other sources of our beliefs. They may be our boss, manager, a very good coworker or a professor who helps and guides us. The good quality or way of life they exemplify affects the way we do our own business. They become role models for us who perform their jobs extraordinarily well and whose characters are beyond reproach. We learn from them when they aim to model integrity, fairness, self-control, and respect.
