Life of Compassion
My Blessings
My family unit at home is my Father, Mother and two older brothers. My earliest memories begin with each of them by my side and I do not know life without them. There have been times in my life that I have made mistakes, times in which I had no friends to confide in, times in which I did not believe in myself and times in which I was scared. Throughout these times my family has been there to pick me up, be my best friend, believe in me and give me courage. Reflecting on this topic I immediately want to share my strong belief on how I will always be thankful and not take for granted the many blessings in my life. As I look around, I see many who are blessed with countless opportunities. Going to college, blessings of health and even God given talents just to name a few. Personally, I have been blessed with the most incredible family anyone can have. I do my best to live my life to its fullest and to be thankful for all of my daily blessings; but above all my family is the one blessing that most humbles me. In today’s society I have learned that many do not know simple family traditions as I am familiar with, such as dinner time together around a table or family game night or a silly dance off to our favorite videos. These simple blessings are ones that I cherish. Each one of my family members have taught me different values that have shaped me into the girl I am, and the woman I am becoming.
Let me begin with my father, Kirt. His integrity makes me proud. My father does not ask much of me but what he always expects from me is the truth. Most of my girlfriends do not share the truth with their fathers. Their reason being, “he will get mad.” I am so fortunate to have a father I can share my worries, my excitement, my life with and know he will always understand as long as I remain honest. My father’s integrity is one of his many characteristics that stand out and inspire me.
Putting others before himself is something my dad does without

My family defines who I am as a person because they are my backbone and the reason why I strive to do my best. My mother’s family has sheltered me ever since I was born they were there for me when I had nobody. Generally I was unwanted by my other side of family, but my mother’s family never neglected me, they have made my life very easy and guided. In my understanding the reason why I said they are my backbone is because as a child( Baby) I had nothing and I was seriously ill but they never abounded me. My grandparents also went far distance into the village to find a cure to my illness and my aunties & uncle used their dorm room bed sheet as a cloth for me. This is why I appreciate everything in my life because I was a nobody as a baby.…

My first reason why family is important to my life is because they have always been there for me. Many of my peers succeed at certain sports or even various classes like English or Calculus. Although, I did struggle with my other activities and curriculum classes, family has always been there. Throughout middle school and high school, I competed with my friend for captain of the soccer team. I didn’t beat him until eighth grade when my hard work finally paid off. Because of this, I now realize how dedication and persistence can help someone achieve one’s goals. If I never decided to join the soccer team and compete for first captain, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to challenge myself and gain the skills and characteristics that would benefit me throughout the rest of my life, if it had not been for my family pushing me to excel.…

How many people see someone that desperately needs the helping hands of others, then actually acts upon it? It’s much easier to wish that you could help someone in need, then truly take the necessary action to assist. However, in the two articles, “Manchester Couple to Retire to Ghana, Where They’ll Care for Children” by Adam Sawamura, and “Improbable Family Tie: Iraqi Boy, Former GI” by Carrie Antlfinger, the main characters all display the ultimate form of compassion humanly possible. Compassion is defined from the Webster’s New World Dictionary as, “sorrow for the suffering or trouble of another or others, accompanied by an urge to help.” The Boisverts display compassion by spending their retirement helping…

    Ethics of Compassion

To help explain the ethics of compassion I will be using reference from the Dalia Lama’s book Ethics for the New Millennium, more specifically chapter ten; The Need for Discernment, and chapter 5 The Supreme Emotion. I will also refer to Touching Peace, and the five mindfulness trainings. The Dalia Lama had so many strong points it was hard to find any criticisms in his philosophies. One thing that concerned me was how he recognizes people who kill and torture for pleasure. The other point he made that came across as weaker to me or somewhat questionable is that we are to question whether our motive is genuinely compassionate when considered in relation to the totality of all beings. As for the strong points keeping in mind that there is no substantial difference between us, we all share a common desire to be happy and avoid suffering. The second point he made that I think is very strong is that, when we lack discipline, eventually anxiety arises in our mind, and deep in our heart we come to feel a sense of disquiet.…

While growing up I always viewed my family as an average middle class “American Family.” Undoubtedly my family has been one of the most important aspects of my life. Without their guidance and teachings, I would not stand before you as the person I am today. They taught me several vital lessons, but the most important have been to be compassionate to others and learn as much as you can from the people around you because you never know what the future entails.…

Have you ever wondered who would be there for you if something tragic happened? When something bad happens to you, you think all of your friends are going to be there right next to you. I unfortunetaly learned the hard way that is not the case. I did learn that my family will be there no matter what happens in my life. Parents are there to put food on the table, take care of the kids, and make sure they are doing the best they can for their child/children. I believe that family loves you no matter what: if you mess up, get injured, basically anything that happens to you, you can go to your family for help.…

In “On Compassion” Barbara Lazear shows three main examples on how people in the Manhattan area show compassion for the homeless people in their community. After she gives the three main examples she then goes on to question whether they are actually showing compassion or if they are showing pity, care, or simply just selfishness. She also goes on to wondering if the people who are doing good things for the homeless people in the community are doing them just out of fear itself. One example of this is when the lady with the stroller gives a homeless man money while he is staring at her baby, she brings up the point that she may have just given him the money so he wouldn’t do anything to her or her baby. While wrapping up the end of the story she discusses how she believes that compassion is not something that someone is born with but rather something that you have to learn throughout your life.…

What does compassion really mean to me? It means to show empathy to someone who is hurt or who got their feelings hurt. Like, Elie Wiesel, Elie was a Holocaust survivor. He cared for everyone. Compassion meant a lot to him because no one showed compassion. Compassion means to me too, show love to someone like Elie Wiesel did. Also, to show kindness towards others, even if they don’t deserve it. That’s what compassion means to me!…
