STATEMENT OF THE ISSUE/PROBLEM
Today the living situation of American Indians on the reservations is horrible. There are many people who turn to alcohol because of their bad living conditions. Many people are poor, unemployed and don’t have a stable place to live. Most people are under the poverty line and the life span of Indians living on the reservation is shorter than other people living in the United States. A lot of the problems that occur today in American Indian communities are a direct result of the Indian history and the U.S Government. The question that would be discussed in this policy brief is, “How can the health and well-being of American Indians be promoted.” Basically talking about the well being of American Indians, why it matters to help them, and what could be done. BACKROUND OF THE PROBLEM
These statistics show how life for the Indians is in the Pine Ridge Reservations. The population is around 40,000people. This is bad because 80% of the people are unemployed and 61% of residents under the age of 18 are below the poverty line. Most likely the highest income that residents can make yearly is about $6,00. This shows how it’s hard for the residents to work and provide for their family. Because of that the death rate is lower than usual. The infant mortality rate is 5x times higher than the United States average. Many residents became alcoholics because they can’t deal with all of the problems happening around and to them. More than 12,500 cans of beer is sold a day. Life expectancy in Pine Ridge is one of the lowest in the United States. Men are averaged to live up to age 48 and women are average to live up to age 52. Many teens turn to weed, sex, alcohol, attempted suicide and don’t graduate suicide. All of this dreadful and needs to change. These people cannot live like this.
