My understanding of The Journey is that journeys are essentially the only way to find what one is searching for and this will eventually lead to self discovery. Journeys allow individuals to extend themselves physically, mentally or emotionally as they face challenges. This understanding of mine has been shaped by the novel Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, ‘Journey to the Interior’, a poem by Margaret Atwood and The Red Tree, a picture book by Shaun Tan. Yann Martel, Margaret Atwood and Shaun Tan use various techniques such as extended metaphors, symbolism, imagery and figurative language to show how journeys lead to self discovery and they are the only way one will find what they are searching for and also allow travellers to extend themselves in different aspects.…

Journeys are a multi-faceted concept which can result in both positive and negative outcomes. “A Righteous Day” (1988) by Mudrooroo and “A Road Not Taken” (1916), both explore an inner journey as an implication of a physical journey. Composers of both poems have effectively articulated this inner self-realisation through a variety of language devices.…

These texts are also both demonstrative of how a physical journey is usually the catalyst of an inner journey. In Frost’s text the ignition of the inner journey is the persona’s movement through a snowy forest, far away from human civilization. In Allende’s text the inner journey is brought about via Alex Cold’s adventure through the wild Amazon. Allende and Frost both teach us that physical journeys and inner journeys almost always go hand-in-hand.…

Inner journeys often compel the individual to contemplate challenges faced throughout life through a continual process of self reflection. This process can be seen in the following texts, Dante’s Inferno & Kublai Khan by samuel taylor colleridge. Each text reveals self reflection whereby leads the person to question themselves. Secondly they both indicate that there are challenges in life metaphorically or allegorically represented in the imaginative journey. Finally each text shows that a journey is non-linear, and that the intended destination will be delayed or altered due to obstacles that are faced. All which represent obstacles in the journey. In the hilarious yet sorrowful film “Life is Beautiful”, the main character Guido, who was played by Oscar winning actor Roberto Benigni who also directed and co-wrote this film, helps his son and wife Dora, played by Nicoletta Braschi who is Benigni real life wife, survive the horrors of a Jewish Concentration Camp through his sense of humor and imagination. Though there were scenes about what went on during the holocaust, it was only a backdrop to the films true meaning. The movie starts out when Guido, who was working at his uncle’s hotel at the time, meets a beautiful girl name Dora who was already engaged to a fascist official. This doesn’t stop Guido from trying to sweep her off her feet. He arrives at her engagement party riding a horse with anti-Semitic slurs written all over its body. Dora gets on the horse with Guido and ride off to the night. Several years’ later, Guido and Dora are married and have a son, Giosue. Through the use of symbolic interactionism, interpersonal deception, and nonverbal communication, Guido helps his family survive the holocaust by using his humor, compassion, and analytical thinking skills.…
