John Gleason 5th Period 9/1/2011 How many people do you know that could say the have shot a pen cap into their eye and burst a hole in the back of it? I know just one. ME. During the first week of summer going into 7th grade my family decided we were going to make homemade water guns!! They were made out of surgical tubing with a pen cap jammed in one end of it. They were so cool and so much fun to play with. We had been using them on and off for about a month when the incident happened. My buddy Cole had come home with me to spend the night for the weekend and I couldn’t wait to show him my “super awesome” water gun. I filled it up the same way we always had. We had a high-pressure nozzle on the end of our hose that we would fill up the guns with. Then it exploded. My face had been right next to it to make sure that the nozzle and pen camp were lined up when it popped. Then pen cap shot directly into my eye. It was just Cole and I home alone. I remember I screamed the loudest I ever had in my life and then I blacked out. Luckily, my neighbor was out mowing his lawn and he sprinted over to see what had happened. When I told him that I couldn’t see out of my eye, he put me in his car and rushed me to the ER. We called and texted both of my parents what seemed like a million times trying to get ahold of them. We couldn’t reach them because they were getting new cell phones and their sim cards were not into their new phones yet. It made the situation a lot more tense than it needed to be. The doctors put me into dry clothes and began to ask my friend, neighbor and myself what had happened to try and fully understand the situation. After they got the whole story, they began to perform simple eye sight tests to see what happened. The doctors determined that I had burst a hole in the back of my eye and that my eye was now full of blood. The next day, we went to the optometrist to get a second opinion. He came to the same conclusion and I was sentenced to six weeks of bed... [continues]
