First of all, the proponents would like to thank our Almighty Father for giving us the strength and knowledge in finalizing our system proposal for our final requirement in Software Engineering.

We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to our adviser Engr. Ronaldo Tinio for his continuous support in our Information Systems Analysis and Design; and Software Engineering course. Engr. Tinio shared the best of his ability with his patience, motivation, enthusiasm, and immense knowledge. His guidance helped us in all the time of system planning and thesis writing. We could not have imagined having a better adviser and mentor for our System Design study.

Our deepest gratitude to our faculty collaborator, Engr. Belinda Bunag, for her encouragement, insightful comments, and continuous support for the entire system design and thesis writing.

Our sincere thanks to Engr. Emilita Presbitero and Engr. Julius Cabauatan for imparting his knowledge in our class and bringing out the best programmer and analyst that we could be.

To the City of Mandaluyong Science High School, most especially to Mr. Henry Sabidong and Mrs. Lourdeline Lacson for giving us the opportunity to conduct our study and system design.

Lastly, to our family and friends, who never failed to guide us, and inspired us to face every trial in our life.

This research study was conducted to develop LAN Based Library Information System for the City of Mandaluyong Science High School.

The main goal of the study is to develop a system that will manage the transactions of the library with the following specified objectives: (1) to come up with a suitable design of a LAN Based Library System which will replace the existing system of the City of Mandaluyong Science High School; (2) to develop a system that would monitor the student’s book liabilities and transactions; (3) and to improve the level of service and quality of output generated by the school library.

The final output of this study is a LAN Based CMSHS Library Information System which will be a better alternative to the existing system. This will improve the different transactions by monitoring the borrowing and returning of books and will provide better response for book and student record queries.

The proponents also foreseen that user’s of the proposed system might encounter difficulties at first but the proponents would find means to solve the future difficulty.

This chapter gives an overview on the existing library system of City of Mandaluyong Science High School. This is where the proponents conceptualized their entire research. It also discussed the main problems that the proposed system has to solve. Through this, the proponents were able to design an effective monitoring tool for the school’s library transactions.

Background of the Study

The City of Mandaluyong Science High School (CMSHS) was founded in 1996 by Congressman Neptali "Boyet" Gonzales II, to lead, guide and assist students in bringing out the best in them. Its aim is to help students achieve excellence, competence and leadership through their advance trainings in science and technology, communication arts, mathematics, and as well as social and cultural skills.

Thus, the City of Mandaluyong Science High School Library has provided reading and learning materials for thousands of students to utilize the best resources in conducting their projects and research .It welcomes students with research or study interests in the history and understanding of different subject area by supplying sufficient source of book references and suggestions. Students from this school, uses the library to supplement and boost their classroom experiences, to learn skills in locating sources of information, and to develop good comprehension and study habits. Books here are arranged in an open system where everyone is free to search for the...
