There are many different opinions on this issue as to whether it is morally or emotionally okay for a child to be raised by same sex parents. In this paper I am going to help the reader decide whether it is acceptable for a gay couple to adopt a child. In addition, I will form my own conclusion on this very touchy subject.
I am first going to start by talking about gay marriage because that is where all of this starts. Many people believe that it should only be between a man and a woman. Furthermore, there is also a percentage that believes all you need are two adults that love each other and are willing to give a full commitment of marriage. There are also many questions that a person must ask themselves when dealing with gay marriage and adoption. They include how will this affect the children? Is it better for the children to be raised in a foster home or attempt to be raised by a same sex couple? Is there a better chance of physical or sexual abuse from a gay or lesbian couple? These are all questions that will never have a true definitive answer but there is much debate on this subject. I will address the argument of why I feel that gay couples should be allowed to adopt as they choose.
One of the main arguments against gay marriage is that the original purpose of marriage is to have offspring and because lesbian and gay couples cannot procreate they should not be allowed to marry. In the eyes of the church and other religious organizations this is a very valid argument but where do you categorize couples that get married in the church and are unable to produce any offspring whether it be the male or female who is infertile. These couples will probably turn to unnatural methods of pregnancy such as a surrogate mother or fertility drugs. So, these children are then brought into this world by a way that is not the normal procedure for the religious beliefs of procreation.
