Dear Editor:
The article "Habitat for Humanity, Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative team up to rehab Ypsilanti home" posted January 17, 2011 is a way to help the recent release of prisoners. As the article suggests, these men could just lay down and do nothing because they have paid their debt to society. I believe that most men would help out society by volunteering or by working for their keep if given the chance.
Their are a lot of people who will and do hold your past against you. There are those people who make you feel hopeless and a feeling of doom when they pass judgement on you. So I can see why nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity and Michigan Community Service Commission show appreciation for these prisoners. They realize that these prisoners are members of our society.
Some of these prisoners are volunteering, working and participating in school to become better and productive members of our society. Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative is providing these prisoners with six months of rent. The Habitat for Humanity is a place to volunteer to work and gain satisfaction. You will not only be satisfied that the job was well done; but you will also gain experience. This experience will look good on your resume when you apply for jobs.
So far, the Habitat for Humanity have constructed 90 homes with adults and children placed in all of them. The Habitat for Humanity and MIRP are successful because of the volunteers who have worked at their programs. It gives the prisoner satisfaction to know that have contributed to society. They are helping themselves to become productive members society. [continues]
