Document Analysis: “Letter from Birmingham Jail”
This is a letter written by Martin Luther King, Jr. while he was being held in Birmingham Jail. He was thrown in this jail for organizing and carrying out a peaceful nonviolent protest on the racial segregation going on in Birmingham. It was one of a number of segregation protests that he was carrying out in Alabama.

The main reason why he was holding these protests in Alabama and other southern states is because at the time they were last people still holding on to and believing that segregation is morally acceptable. This wasn’t King’s first time being to prison. At this time he was constantly being persecuted for his beliefs that segregation and racism is immoral. One point that needs to be brought up about King is that he was a clergyman so the majority of his ideas and beliefs reflected that of the church. He took the basic ideas of his church and came up with morals that the whole world could reflect on and realize that it was in the best interest for mankind as a whole whether you worshipped his same religion or not. I believe that the main reason why the south was staying so true to segregation is that they feared change. They were satisfied with how things were mainly because they weren’t feeling the racism and hate such as the blacks were feeling. This letter was written as a way for King to answer criticism from a letter written by eight clergymen pertaining to King’s protest which landed him in the Birmingham Jail. The clergymen’s letter is pretty much they’re way to explain why they did what they did, mainly putting a majority of protestors in jail. In this letter they thank the police and acknowledge their “bravery” in handling the situation. When King read this he was shocked by the ignorance of the clergyman, thus writing his letter from Birmingham Jail.
