LESSON PLAN
Goal: Introduction to Multiplication, and making a multiplication spinning wheel.
Standards: Computation
5.2.1 Solve problems involving multiplication and division of any whole numbers. (Core Standard)
5.2.2 Add and subtract fractions (including mixed numbers) with different denominators. (Core Standard)
5.2.7 Use mental arithmetic to add or subtract simple decimals. (Core Standard)
Problem Solving
5.7 Students make decisions about how to approach problems and communicate their ideas.
Objectives: 1. Students display desired level of understanding of Addition and
Subtraction principals by correctly completing the problems during the
Multiplication Spinning Wheel Game.
2. Students display observable understanding of Multiplication basics by
accurately completing the problems during the Multiplication Spinning
Wheel Game.
3. Students demonstrate multiplication rules and concept understanding
by accurately and successfully completing the problems during the
Multiplication Spinning Wheel Game.
Materials: Dry Erase Board, Markers (colors) and Eraser
Wheels made from poster board (see Associated File for sample wheels)
Internet accessible computers
Student Web Lesson: Spinning Wheels
Multiplication charts
Preparations
1. Prepare sets of wheels as follows:
a. Cut out two 24” circles from poster board
b. Cut out the centers of each wheel
c. Place the numbers 2-9 around the wheels
Note: Number one set of wheels sequentially, and another set randomly.
2. Have multiplication charts available for students.
3. Have computers ready with the Spinning Wheels lesson available for students who want to practice.
Lesson Presentation:
1. Using the board and markers review by demonstrating and discussing all of the math facts and practices thus discussed:
a. Addition and Subtraction
b. Multiplication basics
2. Explain the Multiplication... [continues]
