Specific Purpose: To inform about Leo Tolstoy a great novelist.

Capture:I. Leo Tolstoy was born September 9, 1828 in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia.

Motivate:II. Unfortunately by age two Leo lost his mother and by the age of nine his father passed away.

Transition: (if needed)III. Leo’s aunt was appointed as their legal guardian.

Preview:IV. He was home tutored by German and French teachers but they described him as unable and unwilling to learn.

A. He then attended the Kazan University his low grades forced him to transfer into an easier law program.

B. He then moved back to his home town and tried to become a farmer but again failed.

C. His brother Nicolay noticed his heavy gambling habits and debts, and encourage
him to join the army.

Events occurred in his life that reflected in the creation of his novels.

First Main PointI. In 1851 Leo joined the army while there he began to write his first novels.

Support A. Leo’s first novel Childhood was published in 1852 which was a reflection of his
childhood

1. Tolstoy was praised and encourage with his first novel.

2. He then continued to write Boyhood and Youth.

B. After returning from serving time in the army Leo then traveled to many foreign
countries.

1. In one of his trips he witnessed a public execution a very traumatic experience
that changed his life forever.

2. When he returned to his home town he established schools for the peasants’
children.

A writer is a dear and necessary for the measures of which he reveals to us the inner workings of his very soul.
