Legalize Marijuana and Cripple the Mexican Drug Cartels
It has been forty years since President Richard M. Nixon declared a “ war on drugs.” During that forty year time span our government has spent upwards of a trillion dollars in an attempt to reduce drug trafficking in the United States. Lawmakers not only targeted the more illicit drugs like cocaine and heroin, they managed to make marijuana enemy number one. It has been estimated that 15 million people in this country smoke marijuana. That should be the first indication that Nixon’s so called “war on drugs” is not a winnable war. Wake up America! There has never been a better time than right now to seriously consider the legalization of marijuana. Think about it for a minute. We have a $14 trillion dollar deficit and a 10 percent unemployment rate. Legalizing marijuana would not only create jobs, reduce crime, and provide much needed revenue for every state in the country, it would also cripple the Mexican drug cartels. After forty years of being on the losing end of this so-called war on drugs, perhaps the United States Government should change its objective and stop looking at marijuana as the enemy. Instead of making war with a plant that God put on this earth, why not make war with the violent criminals who are wrecking havoc on our bordering states. During a Senate Armed Service hearing earlier this month, U.S. Senator John Cornyn, speaking on behalf of Texas, asked James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, about the violence on our southern border. Responding to Senator Cornyn’s questioning, Clapper indicated that our porous southern border posed a threat to our national security (Lanham,2011). That assessment is one that research proves to be true. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) the Mexican drug cartels have partnered with Hezbollah. Hezbollah is a terrorist organization from Lebanon. Before September 11, 2001, Hezbollah was responsible for more American deaths than any other terrorist organization. The groups secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah, has loudly and often proclaimed, “Death to America!” “That was, is, and will always be our slogan” (Webster, 2008). These people want to kill Americans, all Americans, including the millions of Americans who are unwittingly supplying them with the revenue that keeps them in business. Research shows that America’s demand for marijuana furnishes the Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DOTs) with at least $2 billion dollars in revenue every year. Some estimates are as high as $6 billion (Walker, 2010). That explains why the supply of marijuana is as constant as the demand. In light of the information that research uncovered concerning the enormous amounts of money that Americans spend on marijuana every year, there is one question that begs to be asked; “ Why, instead of legalizing marijuana, is the United States Government willing to allow billions of American dollars to flow into Mexico, knowing that those same dollars will be spent in support of a terrorist organization?” Hezbollah is synonymous with kidnaping, murder, and be-headings. They are the people who took to the streets of Lebanon on September 11, 2001 with roars of laughter and cheers over the deaths of 3000 American citizens. Now they are in Mexico teaching the drug cartels how to implement their tactics of terror. These people are murderers and thieves. They have absolutely no regard for human life. The Mexican drug cartels are terrorizing all of Mexico, and Hezbollah wants to kill Americans. Yes indeed, these are the people who are profiting from the prohibition of marijuana. In an article about marijuana prohibition for the Oakland Tribune, John Russo, an attorney from California wrote this in regard to the cartels; “Money is the oxygen supply of these organizations. Our government’s approach to fighting the drug cartels has been like trying to put...
