Homosexuality is found everywhere. You see on television, books, even in your own city. It is rapidly becoming a social norm. As time goes by, it is becoming part of our everyday lives, even though there are many people that oppose it. Americans should take the time to understand the importance of making gay marriage legal in California. Legalizing gay marriage doesn’t threaten the honor of “traditional” marriage, it promotes equality and prevents discrimination, and it helps unite couples legally and not just religiously. Same-sex marriage doesn’t threaten the honor of “traditional” marriage. When same-sex parents get married, they will probably want to raise a family, which doesn’t threaten “traditional” marriage at all. For years, the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain have legalized gay marriage without signs of damage to heterosexual couples. Social lives in these countries continue unchanged with no increases appearing in the divorce rate. I personally say that gay marriage doesn’t damage “traditional” marriage to any extent. Opponents to gay marriage argue that by allowing gay marriage, marriage between a man and a woman will lose their importance if the definition of marriage is expanded to include same-sex couples as well. If anything, legalizing gay marriage would strengthen families headed by same-sex parents while posing no threats to heterosexual families. Allowing gay marriage is also about promoting equality (same rights as other people) and preventing discrimination. Legalizing gay marriage would state that it’s something normal ( or in this case, new) that shouldn’t be discriminated. By doing this, it prevents gay couples from being made fun of their entire life instead of being treated like a regular person. To me, this is a great idea because it helps prevent discrimination among same-sex couples.
