I believe that the instructions stated in Appendix A are necessary. Even though human today are smart and intellectual they lack common sense. Here’s a great example of intellect vs. common sense, last week I was called for a job interview at a local intermediate medical facility. During my phone call with the Human Resource Manager she told me to bring a hard copy of my resume. Normally that is exactly what I do on every interview, I bring a hard copy of my resume and references just incase their printer did not print it correctly or if I’m being interviewed by more than one person than they would have their own copy. Now to me, being asking to bring a hard copy was kind of weird but the fact that they even have to ask anyone to bring a hard copy really says something about those individuals wanting the job. The statement, “Whatever your personal feelings about the justice and appropriateness of articular laws, all board members, staff and volunteers are to obey all laws in the performance of their work on behalf of community services” tells me a lot about the relationship between law and ethics. It tells me that the relationship between law and ethics is taken very seriously amongst all members of Human Services. The statement also tells me that not many people believe in the laws, as far as the political correctness and abilities. This statement also tells me that somewhere in the past there was a problem with a board member, staff or volunteer when it comes to keeping their personal views out of work.

    Laws and ethics are a touchy subject, even the brightest minds in the world have a tough time coming up with the “right” answer. When applying social responsibility with ethics, we must look at it from multiple sides; let’s use an example, Robert was interested in learning about the workings of professional burglars. Several years ago, he made contact with someone who could put him in touch with a professional burglar, although the burglar had retired several years ago. He contacted this person, who forwarded his interest on to the "retired" professional burglar. The burglar agreed to participate in a series of interviews. The first two interviews went fine, but on the third occasion, his subject indicated that he was planning a burglary in a new development. This was to be a one-time event (rather than a return from retirement) involving burglarizing the home of a wealthy resident in this development. Robert promised his subject anonymity and confidentiality at the outset of his research, but he now had information indicating that a crime was about to be committed. In analyzing laws and ethics in this case, if Robert was being ethical for the integrity of the burglar and did not inform the police of his deeds, he was being unethical in the social responsibility aspect of ethics! When respecting people’s rights, dignity, and diversity, people are going to be affected negatively either way in certain situations. What we need to ask ourselves is, do we act unethically to the side that is committing a crime, or unethically to those who are not?…

    I believe the instruction is necessary because as individuals, we each bring a unique background and set of built in prejudices (meaning disposition to think and act a certain way--not necessarily the negative connotation traditionally associated with the word) with us to the job. As these prejudices are built in, we often act on them without thinking. The instruction serves a two-fold purpose: 1. To enlighten the employee as to what is expected, regardless of their individual predispositions. 2. To suggest that a violation of the law will result in punishment. In other words, some people don't consider the law, but rather act on their instincts, or feelings, or the way they themselves have been treated in the past. The instruction tells these employees that when the law conflicts with their sense of right and wrong, they MUST nevertheless act in accordance with the law.     I would like to begin by giving you a summarized scenario of assignment this week. My role in this scenario is an Event Leader for a tradeshow and exhibition. At the day of the event, I was standing by the loading dock with sweat dripping down my eye brow. As dozens of trucks and other vehicles line up for what seems like miles in the distance.
