Lee Daniels' The Butler
Lee Daniels’ The Butler
Director: Lee Daniels The movie I chose was Lee Daniels’ The Butler and I chose the characters to talk about. The Butler is a great movie with amazing characters such as Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), Hattie Pearl (Mariah Carey), Gloria Gaines (Oprah Winfrey), Howard (Terrence Howard), Carter Wilson (Cuba Gooding Jr.), and so many more. This movie is a brilliant, but truthful film on a subject that is usually shrouded in wishing thinking. It is based upon the life of Eugene Allen, who worked as a butler in the White House during eight presidential administrations. Lee Daniels’ The Butler has been made in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the USA. There has been many different views about Lee Daniels’ The Butler. One review is from www. Metacritic.com. “A host of A- List stars have been enlisted to play small roles in a bid for viewer engagement. See Mariah Carey in a blink- or- you’ll- miss- her role as Cecil Gaines’ maltreated mother.” – Marjorie Baumgarter (Austin Chronicle), Heading: Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Date: Fri. August 16, 2013. I can agree with this critic because Mariah Carey played an amazing part in this movie. This review is also great because it gives us a visual of how Maria Carey looks. Each cast of characters gives us a different personality that make their roles unique. Some critics may have negative feedback, but with as many viewers as The Butler had the negative comments are just like water rolling off a ducks back. According to author Trevor Johnston “As such, ‘The Butler’ proves a decent, significant, but slightly stodgy affair. Its dignified restraint stifles its anger. The devil is in the detail though, since Whitaker’s admirably controlled performance shows a man so worn down by presenting a docile front for his employers that he’s unable to grasp the worth of his college-educated son’s civil rights radicalism. There’s even appreciation for the fortitude of the housewife caught between the two men (Oprah

The movie I chose is Steel Magnolias; the character is Shelby. The movie begins on Shelby’s wedding day to Jackson Latcherie. Shelby is the only daughter of M’Lynn and Drum Eatenton; and has two younger brothers, Tommy and Jonathan. M’Lynn is very protective of Shelby because she is a diabetic and has had fragile health since childhood. Shelby appears in the movie in early adulthood; the movie does not address Shelby’s progression from stages one thru five. She is introduced to the viewers in Erikson’s sixth stage of psycho-social development, Intimacy vs. Isolation. This stage of development focuses on forming intimate loving relationships leading to long- term commitment with someone other than a family member (McLeod, 2008). Shelby’s primary concern, after marriage, is starting a family of her own; this progresses Shelby to Erikson’s seventh stage, Generativity vs.…

I choose Forrest Gump as a historical movie. The movie was about a young man with a mental disability that goes through this major event in the 1960 – 1970s not only that but it was kind of romantic. Though out the entire movie, Forrest seems to be going along with the time line in his life looking for his first true love Jenny. Mean while she is living it out as a hippie tagging along with the wrong crowd and as for Forrest he maintains hope that one day she will love him. Not only that but the events that he lived in leads him to become a war hero and a billionaire. In the end he realize that life keeps on going as a “destiny or floating alike a breeze”.…

The movie, which is based on a true story, presents the effects of the important historical events of the Civil Rights Movement and social and political hardships on Cecil, his wife Gloria and two sons, Louis and Charlie. There are many underlying conflicts throughout the movie. Cecil has to deal with the consequences of the time and effort associated with his job at the White House while juggling with internal family problems, which range from an unfaithful, alcoholic wife, to an independent son who is thrown in and out of jail. Director, Lee Daniels, who also directed the award-winning movie “Precious,” tackled the prodigious challenge of creating a movie that captured the multiple levels of the struggle the African-American culture faced. Daniels did this by properly identifying his target audience, defining the message he wanted to convey to his audience, and in turn, compiling an all-star cast to complete his vision for the movie. “’The Butler’ offers a powerful cinematic corrective to past failures and, in many instances, is revelatory in its deft treatment of America's racial…

Quentin Tarantino paints with a palette of the past. As a young man, he worked in a video store, studiously absorbing film. When he began creating movies himself, he construed the elements of classic cinematic storytelling into his own modern pastiche, this is what sets him apart, and why he is often considered the most influential filmmaker of the 90s. Nearly twenty-five years after his first major film Tarantino gives us his eighth film, The Hateful Eight.…

As exciting as the sound of bugle calls us to arms, the Patriot, directed by Roland Emmerich, earns people’s hearts by its attractive and enthralling plot of the epic of a South Carolinian planter and widower Benjamin Martin(played by Mel Gibson) fighting the ruthless and brutal British dragoon captain called William Tavington(played by Jason Isaacs). A father of seven children, Martin is one of the British army during the French-Indian War, but with the tension evoked between America and Britain, and the unfortunate deaths of his two sons, Martin is determined to fight a bloody battle against the British in American Revolution. In general, the movie is attractive and heart-stirring, yet the actions of characters are so inaccurate, making the viewers to experience the illogical exaggeration combined with excitement.…

Citizen Kane “the best film of the 20th century” according to the AFI and many other film organizations. André Bazin describes this film as “a discourse on method”. What Bazin is basically trying to say is that Citizen Kane is a technical movie for its time. Citizen Kane is a realistic film and it is number one because of it 's cinematography, the framing, editing, kinetics, storytelling, soundtrack and it 's overall message.…

The Shawshank Redemption (1994) is a spectacular feature film directed by Frank Darabont who adapted Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (Different Seasons collection). First things first, the poster of the movie has these words “Fear can hold you prisoner, Hope can set you free” on it. This quote clearly explains the power of hope freedom. Now moving to the movie itself, there have been many amazing prison dramas in the past so how does Shawshank Redemption filled with so many clichés differ from them? The movie is spread across a long period of time letting the simplest things take a fuller meaning the smallest details have their importance. This is what makes the main difference. In a place where everything has…

As many critics say, Minority Report is one of the movies that has a very realistic vision upon future. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Minority Report is based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. It’s a neo-noir science fiction movie and was officially released on June, 2002. The action in the movie happens in 2054, in Washington D.C and in Northern Virginia. An elite squad that enforces law named “PreCrime”, eliminates crime virtually from Washington D.C. The whole story revolves around John Anderton, captain of “PreCrime”. With the help of three gifted humans called “precogs”, the squad manages to stop crimes before they take place. But the system seems to make an error, when it shows that John Anderton will commit a murder in the next 36 hours. So a “manhunt” begins, a “manhunt” of himself, as Anderton is determined to prove that the system is wrong and to find out the truth. He also believes that one of the “precogs” predictions’, namely Agatha’s, will help him find the truth of this “minority report”.…

The movie "Finding Forrester" was a good, quality movie with a great theme and moral. In this movie Jamal, an African American basketball player and student, meets a famous old writer named William Forrester through a dare. Little do they know when they first meet what a great difference they would each eventually make for each other. William is the first to help Jamal by helping him in his writing. Jamal is a great writer but just doesn't know it yet. William helps Jamal find himself in his writing, and Jamal prospers into quite a good writer. The help didn't really stop there either. Jamal would tell William all about his day and how it went. Forrester would then offer his help and advice and helped Jamal with many aspects of his life. Forrester has a big problem of his own though. He will not leave the premises of his own little apartment. He doesn't leave for anything, he has all his groceries and everything else he needs delivered to him, and his telephone ringer has been turned off for over six months. Jamal actually gets him to leave for William's birthday and Forrester ends up having a good time. Jamal eventually wakes up something in Forrester that makes him decide he needs to get out and go see his family. Along with the story line of them helping each other it touches a little bit on race. The movie did a great job portraying some quality…

Fried Green Tomatoes has always been portrayed as a “woman’s” novel, but it really a story about true friendship. The plot encompasses many issues that face the people of the 1920’s and 1930’s including the issue of racism, before the time of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. It includes death, abuse, murder, and even menopause. However, the main plot tells the story of two women, Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison, and the trials and tribulations of their life. Idgie and Ruth are business partners, best friends, and if you have read the book then in the eyes of many, lesbians.…

Quentin Tarantino’s film Inglourious Basterds is a whole lot of movie. Upon purchased the DVD one aspect that was brought to my attention was the misspelled title. This film, despite popular belief, is overwhelmingly good and tastefully produced. In this motion picture Tarantino shows that there is a mature side to his film production as opposed to his earlier film of slightly childish nature like Kill Bill and Death Proof. This side is still talkative but prone to longer sentences, drawn to more complex topics, and lures you into a complexly addicting plot.…

By many, Citizen Kane is one of the greatest films ever made. Orson Wells, at age 25, directed, produced, and starred in this film. Citizen Kane is a memorable film for countless reasons. The film brought about controversy because it fictionalized the life of William Randolph Hearst, a powerful newspaper publisher. The film draws remarkable parallels with his life and his relationship with his mistress. There is also speculation that the film is loosely based on Wells' life as well. This movie tells the fascinating story of the life and death of Charles Foster Kane, a narcissistic newspaper runner, politician, and a wealthy millionaire. What makes this movie spectacular is not only the acting of the actors, but the symbolism and cinematic effects. The techniques used by the cinematographer brought this film to life. This is what sets Citizen Kane apart from other films.…

My favorite movie is Coming to America with Eddie Murphy. The reason this great movie is my favorite is because Eddie Murphy is hilarious and one of my favorite actors in my book. This movie is extremely funny and is basically what I wanted my life to be when I first saw this movie, I wanted to meet a prince, fall in love and get married like every young girl wanted when they were little. This movie was much much more than that in my eyes, it's not your ordinary Cinderella story, it's much deeper. It opened my eyes on how to really deal with responsibilities in this world we live in and being rich and famous is not what it is all cracked up to be, the rich and the famous are more depressed and lonely then the regular average Joe and Jane of…
