The learning team charter is the Bible that every team must have to complete any certain task. It introduces the team to one another and gives vital information to each team member who needed to go through the school journey together as a team. Information included in the team charter is personal information such as contact information so that the team can keep in contact with one another anytime that it is needed (Locker & Kienzler, 2008). Other information available through the team charter is learning the weaknesses and strengths of the other members on the team. For example, one member may be very strong in leading the team; another may be more of a follower and does better when given instructions of what is exactly needed from him or her. One team member may be good at formatting, referencing, or researching. This is vital information. People do not want members of their team to have to be responsible for a task that they are not comfortable with or cannot complete. Strategies to promote individual and group communication
The team charter also includes ground rules and guidelines set by the entire team. All members agree to participate in the learning team charter process. Most often in the learning team charter there are expectations for time management and involvement. The team charter also has a special considerations section. If a person is a university student in a team learning situation, he or she will have a new team charter for every class that they take. The information will change but the charter will have the basic information on it (Locker & Kienzler, 2008).
The team charter is a basis for group communication. It gives the team members the information needed to keep in constant contact with one another when it is necessary. Group communication in a team learning situation is very important. If a team does not communicate with one another, the whole team will suffer. Group communication is the only way that a team can complete the tasks at hand. Team members have to be open and honest with each other at all times. If a team member does not communicate, he or she are unhappy with an issue, whatever it may be, it can cause distress for the whole team. Team members also need to let each other know if they do not understand something being done with an assignment so that the rest of the team can help. Teams are there to help each other with the projects and that can only be accomplished through communication.
Individual communication is when an individual is communicating one-on-one, and it becomes more personal. Group communication is for discussing issues in a business or organization or in a team learning situation. Other types of group communication such as three-ways calling is where you can talk to more than one person at a time, but usually applies on a friend or family type basis. Conference calls are another type of group communication in which issues can be discuss and solved or options on the issues can be thought through all the parties who are communicating together.
“One of the strategies that promote individual and group communication is the types of words and phrases that are used” (Witherspoon, 1996). When a person talks to an individual, he or she may use shorter sentences and still be able to communicate the meaning of the conversation. When they are talking to a group, they may use longer sentences to arrive at more details in his or her conversation for better understanding of the context. Another important factor in group communication according to (Locker & Kienzler, 2008) is “when talking to a group the audience must be taken into consideration,” (Locker & Kienzler, 2008). The speaker must know the group he or she is communicating with. There are many factors involved in this such as “cultures, religion, race, ethnics and genders” (Locker & Kienzler, 2008).
