Education has evolved dramatically from the days of one educator in a one-room class. Today, student learning is no longer confined to a physical space. Computers and the Internet have broken through walls, giving students greater opportunities to personalize their education, access distant resources, receive extra help or more-challenging assignments, and engage in learning in new and unique ways. Nowadays, learners are finding the convenience and flexibility of online learning a match for their learning goals and busy lifestyles. Online degree programs, courses, and virtual universities targeting adult learners have increased. Although students can easily locate an online course or degree program that is both convenient and accessible, they may face significant challenges as compared to the traditional learners.
1.1 Challenges faced by online learners
Among the problems faced by online learners as pointed out by Levy (1999) include the challenge of time management and maintaining personal direction and motivation.
Having the independence and flexibility on their learning, online learners may have the tendency to lack in their lessons if they do not have a good time management. Monitoring their own lessons can be too taxing for some students especially those who are working at the same time. As opposed to the traditional learners whom have the luxury of their lessons monitored by a facilitator at a specific time and space, online learners must acquire good time-management and more importantly must stick to what have been planned in ensuring the success of the learning process.
In another scenario, monitoring students’ own lesson could also be difficult in the sense of maintaining or sustaining the learner’s personal direction and motivation. Traditional learners have peers or course mates and facilitators to drive them in the learning process. Online learners are most of the time confined to their own space and timing, therefore motivation has to come from within them. Online learners must be able to self-motivate and must be sure of what their objectives are. Then, they must be able to execute and carry out plans to achieve the objectives. Online learners who do not or cannot set their personal direction and stay motivated will find it difficult to follow the online lessons or courses till the end.
2.0 Skills for online learners.
After some research done, the conclusion that can be made is that there are few common skills that are essential in being online learners. I shall discuss in this assignment specifically three of the most vital skills needed in becoming successful online learners. Developing good time-management strategy, self motivation and effective communication skills are the criteria that will be highlighted in this assignment. This assignment will also analyse the importance of acquiring the skills and how online learners will be able to apply and improve the skills identified.
