LEARNING SKILLS – Note-Taking and Outlining

Virginia Tech Study Skills Self-Help Information http://www.ucc.vt.edu/academic_support_students/study_skills_information/

The Cornell system is a systematic technique of note taking which is designed to efficiently organize and condense subject material. Notes are written only once which saves a great deal of time and allows more time for students to study rather than rewrite lecture notes. Pages are divided by a vertical margin, which is placed about 2.5 inches from the left side of the paper. This division is used to separate the right side which is used for note taking and the left side which is used to note key words or phrases. This column is referred to as the recall column. During a lecture, notes should be written legibly in paragraph form and should capture general ideas rather than illustrative ideas. The use of abbreviations is highly recommended to achieve the most efficient notes possible. After the lecture, the recall column is used to take down ideas or key words. This system of note taking can be a great way of studying and preparing for an examination.

Some of the strategies for taking in information include making lists, taking notes which are often verbatim, referring to reference material such as dictionaries, manuals, and websites and receiving handouts to read (Fleming, 2011b). An example of applying these strategies would be in a classroom setting. While the author is listening to the lecture, she is also taking notes to review at a later time. Making lists has become a daily part of life for this author as it is a way of organizing information. It features a three-part system used for condensing and organizing notes, whether in the classroom or out in the field. The majority of students in my class have enrolled because they recently moved to Boston or are attempting to. Many of them are very interested in learning more about American culture. It can be a hurdle for them to find reading at their level that still gives the amount of incite into the American life that they are looking for. For my skills related lesson I’ve chosen to do a reading and speaking fluency lesson. The text I’ve chosen is the first paragraph from page one of the book On the Road by Jack Kerouac, published by New American Library in 1955. This is an ungraded text appropriate for upper-intermediate to advanced students. The text topic should provoke interesting conversations that allows students to form their own opinions. I feel that this book is a quintessential read to understanding the progress of American thought over the last hundred years. With the text students will practice skimming for gist, scanning for information, reading for comprehension, and will be introduced to some new vocabulary.…

I then showed both of my skills to the camera, the ones I got were bathing and baby and spoon feeding a baby.…
