Abstract
Research is continuously looking for ways to determine causes of learning disabilities (LD’s). Learning disorders are thought to be caused by differences in how a person's brain works and how the brain processes information. What was once thought of as a simple neurological problem has now been proven to be much more complex. Evidence is abundant that proves that LD’s do not stem from a specific area of the brain, but from difficulties in combining information from various regions of the brain, which causes subtle disturbances in the brain structures and its functions. An adolescent with a LD cannot improve learning skills on their own.   An LD, or disorder, is not a problem with intelligence, but complex in potential origins. LD’s can be the result of labeling or a traumatic event. There is hope for those with learning disabilities if diagnosed, the brain can change and be retrained.

      Parents frequently start a ruler chart on the wall to monitor their child’s physical growth from year to year; academic or educational growth can be measured and charted as well.   The yardsticks used for measurement are different, but the principles are the same. Measuring educational growth or progress is not that different from measuring physical growth. Instead of a tape measure and scales, you need psychological and educational achievement test assessments and results interpreted by specialist in this field.
      The practice of measuring change, called pre- and post- testing (Geist, 2002), is essential to educational planning. An individualized educational plan (IEP) is developed and implemented through a team effort with the parents and education professionals representing the child in need.
