    Our academic society has and is still thriving on the shoulders of teachers. Teachers show students methods of how to succeed and how to fail. Although the majority of the teachers in the United States are open minded to whomever their students are, there are many teachers in college who teach without this mentality. There is a growing population of international undergraduate students who are frustrated that education in the U.S is seldom adjusted to foreign circumstances. Many academic institutions harbor teachers who don’t have the training to deal with international students who’s language, culture, and perspective is different than theirs. Whether it is an Asian, Hispanic, European, or Indian that is beginning college in the United States, undergraduate teachers need to learn better ways to adaptively teach these unique and newly incoming students in order to instill a positive and meaningful educational experience.…

    Over the semester, I have become cognizant of my feelings of being “in-between”. I feel that I am not entirely American yet I am not fully Taiwanese. Sometimes I have encounters where the other person is surprised I can speak English so well, yet other times I have encounters where the other person is astounded I have maintained fluency in speaking mandarin. This awareness brings new challenges for me, as I struggle to find a context in which my cultural identity belongs. In considering my cultural identity, I thought of other Taiwanese immigrants, and recognize the varying degrees of acculturation and language proficiency among individuals leading to feelings of being alone. Additionally, It has been challenging for me to recognize my experiences of being oppressed or discriminated against. This difficulty I have realized has to do with the normalization of marginalization, but also because parts of my personality fits those of Asian stereotypes, making it harder to discern between acts of prejudice versus critiques of my personality. Another challenge is that of conveying my cultural competency to clients in a way that demonstrates I can empathize with their experience, although I can do my best to be open and show curiosity, acceptance and empathize, I question if it will be…

    In my secondary school, we used to term the scholars, predominantly Chinese scholars, as ‘imports’. Every year, the school would ‘import’ twenty scholars into each upper secondary cohort, taking up a rather large percentage of triple science classes, a course which was highly sought after, also looked upon high reverence by many. Thus, their presence naturally denoted a threat to the rest, an elevated incline to the ‘bell-curve’ which compelled stricter moderation, thus resulting in an inherent distaste within Singaporean students towards the introduction of such ‘imports’.
