The graphic novel, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, by Alan Moore, takes place in Brittan starting in 1898. The work takes characters from other novels and uses their past and personality in one novel. The character in the league are, Captain Nemo, Miss Mina Murray, Allen Quaterman, Henry Jekyll, Edward Hyde, Hawley Griffin, Champion Bond, and C. Auguste Dupin.
During this time period, the industrial revolution was taking place. Cities were being built up, people were moving from farms to cities looking for jobs. Factories were being built and the cities were being populated. During this time, cities were dirty, waters were being polluted, and smog was polluting the air.

Captain Nemo is from the novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. The novel was written by Jules Veine in 1870. The genre is science fiction and adventure. It tells the story of a captain with a submarine that dislikes all countries in the world. So he lives in his submarine and travels the seven seas.

Miss Mina Murray is from the novel Dracula. In the book she is being hunted by the Count so he can make her his. Her soon to be husband protects and saves her by killing Dracula. The novel was written in 1897 by the author Brain Stoker. It is a horror and gothic novel.

Allen Quarterman is a famous explorer. He explored most of Africa for the British. Allen Quarterman is from King Soloman’s Mines, written by Sir H. Rider Haggard. It is classified under the genre adventure and was written in 1888.

Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde are the same person. Dr. Jekyll, a scientist, developed a formula that would let his dark side escape from within himself. When the doctor loses control of himself, Mr. Hyde comes out. This is not just a personality change though, it is a physical change. Mr. Hyde looks like a monster.
