LEADERSHIP STYLE| DESCRIPTION| ADVANTAGES OF THIS STYLE OF LEADERSHIP | DISADVANTAGES OF THIS TYPE OF LEADERSHIP | Authoritarian| Is a leadership style characterized by individual control over all decisions and little input from group members. Autocratic leaders typically make choices based on their own ideas and judgments and rarely accept advice from followers. Autocratic leadership involves absolute, authoritarian control over a group.| It can be beneficial when decisions need to be made quickly without consulting with a large group of people. Some projects require strong leadership in order to get things accomplished quickly and efficiently. | People who abuse an autocratic leadership style are often viewed as bossy, controlling, and dictatorial, which can lead to resentment among group members.| Democratic| The democratic leadership style is a very open and collegial style of running a team. Ideas move freely amongst the group and are discussed openly. Everyone is given a seat at the table, and discussion is relatively free-flowing. | The participant can result in high motivation of group members.The knowledge and experience of group members can be used in decision making. Members may feel more committed to group goals and less resistant to managerial actions. | Individuals may dominate the participation or make disruptive contribution. Compromise can result in actions that are not the most effective. Conflict may be resolved by making the least offensive decision not the most effective. | Laissez-faire| Is a type of leadership style in which leaders are hands-off and allow group members to make the decisions.
