Abstract
The situation that was experienced during my leadership rotation on the Happy Unit at University Park Hospital (UPH) was analyzed and reflected upon. My first situation experienced was with my co-assigned registered nurse (RN) B.K., who needed to delegate tasks to me and other RNs on the floor to assist her with a patient who was possibly having, or about to have, a myocardial infarction (MI). I analyzed whether or not my co-assign delegated properly to other RNs on the floor to help her during an emergency situation. The situation is supported with facts from literature. Also included are two National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) questions reflecting upon each situation with a rationale that is supported by literature.
My Leadership Experience on Happy Unit
UPH’s happy unit is located on the first floor. On this floor the nurses care for patients who are either preoperative or postoperative heart transplants. It is a rather small unit that consists of fifteen private rooms. The physical layout of the floor is quite convenient; the nurses’ station is in the middle of the unit with easy access to both hallways.
The staff consists of three to four RNs, a unit manager, and a nurses’ aide. The nurse patient ratio on this floor is 1:1 or 2:1. This floor uses primary nursing, where there is no charge nurse, rather every nurse is responsible for their own patients, whether it be placing a call to the doctor, charting new orders, or ordering lab work.
Because this floor is a specialty unit these nurses interact with the same doctors on a day to day basis. There are several cardiothoracic surgeons that round on that floor every morning; the nurses must give report to the doctors including any updates on their patients before the doctors step into the room to see them.
Situation One
I arrived at UPH for 6:45am and reported to evening shift and they had introduced me to my co-assign RN for the day, B.K.. B.K. is a very experienced
