Transforming Teams and Improving Work Culture through Leadership in Otorhinolaryngology Ward Introduction
In my assignment, I am evaluating leadership methods which may influence and affect staffs’ service quality in patients’ care. Leaders are needed in the activities of our daily lives. Without them, it would be difficult for a group, a team or an organization to determine its direction or achieving its goals. Leaders are responsible for to bring success to the group or organization under their leadership. In reality, position may only denote title but not the leadership. I worked in a 12 bedded mixed ward that deals with ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) conditions, where operations may be carried out as recommended by the ENT Specialists in government hospital. Throughout my service, I have witnessed too many errors and weaknesses both in the quality of leadership and staffs’ quality of service which affects patients’ care. I have seen that this ward is having conflicts between its leader and staffs as well as conflicts among the nurses themselves. Leadership styles play a major role in determining the success of an organization. If a leader practices effective leadership, the organization will be successful thus giving the staffs a sense of achievement. In this assignment, Thain (1993) firmly stated that leaders’ distribution of tasks to the staff must be clear and comprehensible and all vagueness should be made clear. Effective leadership will create work satisfaction among the staff and the success of an organization depended on the leader effectiveness of management to lead. Leadership is an essential aspect in management. The ability to lead is a clear sign that an individual possesses the talent to become an effective manager. But competency alone will not be sufficient to achieve excellence in management. Peter Northouse (2001) had stated that leadership is a process whereby an individual will influence other groups of individuals in achieving the same goals or objectives. It is usually stated that effective managers are good leaders, but it doesn’t mean that a good leader is a good manager. To become a good manager, one needs to have the ability to plan, organize and should be wise in control. Equipped with the power given, leaders must be able to utilize all the available resources of the organization toward achieving its objectives. Communication inefficiencies among peers are also unsatisfactory. Procrastinations by staff have caused poor patient’s care service of Ward Z. It is not surprising for conditions such as weaknesses in nursing care plan, poor maintenance of emergency equipment, piling up of expired medicinal items which are not returned to pharmaceutical department, over run of intravenous infusion and poor management of ward’s storage are all caused by the ineffective supervision and teamwork itself. Communication experts believe that poor communication is the source to most problems and the solution to these is effective communication (Pearson, 2000). The only method of creating job satisfaction to increase motivation would be by making the job more interesting. This will open doors to achievement, establishment, responsibilities and progress. This process will create bigger scope for individual achievement, giving more challenges and responsibility of career and bigger opportunity for development and self-progress (Wright, 1989). A large number of leaders made the error by assuming that their main role is to instruct the subordinates to do tasks as ordered. A good leader needs to be knowledgeable of the staffs’ predicaments and emotion. Gee (2003) stated that motivation is essential in helping a learning session. . Manager in ward Z is suggested to motivate staff by create a motivating environment. The use of motivational strategies must be carried out appropriately for each person and situation.
