Leadership is the ability to get people to willingly follow you. The measure of leadership is not in the quality of the head but the tone of the body. The signs of outstanding leadership appear primarily among their followers. (Publishers & Perry, 2009) This depends of course on whom they are leading and what their goals are. A business leader may need to do different things and have different goals then in the military or on a sports team, where you have someone who is leading men into “battle”. Although their goals may be different, many of the characteristics needed to lead are the same. A leader must be a visionary to see what needs to be done and have the passion and conviction to do it. The purpose of leaders is not to dominate or diminish followers but to strengthen and help them to develop. (Publishers & Perry, 2009) A leader must be decisive enough to make decisions when needed but also have the courage to make the tough decisions. They must be a good judge of character and must be able to put the right people in the right places to succeed. A leader must also be a teacher and a mentor. Leaders are responsible for future leadership. They need to identify, develop, and nurture future leaders. (Depree, 1989) There are many ways that they can help their followers learn to become leaders, but the best way is by setting a good example for others to follow. Exemplary leaders know that if they want to gain commitment and achieve the highest standards, they must be models of the behavior they expect of others. (Kouzes & Posner, 2007) A leader must not ask someone to do something that they are not willing to do themselves. They must be willing to be the first one in and the last one out. Providing a good example to others is critical for developing bonds between leader and follower, establishing trust, and modeling practices you want others to follow. (Publishers & Perry, 2009).
