LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT 1
The desire to become a leader has not been a driving force in my life. I have always been under the assumption that by lying low and following the crowd, I would be able to accomplish my career and personal goals without too much undue stress and be able to get along with others I meet and work with, without conflict. However, the older I get, the more I realize that the definition of a leader is not what I originally thought it was. It is more than being “the boss”, controlling every detail in one’s life, at work and at home. It is more than being the person that everyone follows because they feel they have to. It is about being in control of your future, your goals and your dreams. If my actions inspire others to learn more, do more and become more, than I want to become a leader.
I realize now, after taking this course, that in order to accomplish my goals in my personal life and professional life, I have to take control of my actions and make some changes. I need to first adjust my attitude and become a leader in my personal life before that attitude change can affect my professional life. Before setting out in this course, I envisioned myself in control, as a leader, in my personal life. At home, every detail mattered. From how and when the bills got paid to what sponge was used to clean which sink. Everything had to be done my way or it wasn’t done correctly. The managerial style I used at home was causing stress where there didn’t need to be any. I was micro-managing my personal life.
At work, I feel I was not working toward my full potential, but was stuck in a rut. when I originally started there three years ago, I felt that in order to blend in and avoid conflict with fellow co-workers and supervisors, I should just follow along with the crowd and not have any new ideas or vision about where I would like to see my place of employment be in the future.
