1. What are the major issues in this case?
There are generational conflicts in the case. Josh is a Generation Y and Sarah is a Generation X. Josh is impatient and just wants things to be done ASAP. Sarah is a believer in paying your dues before being recognized, which is shown in the way she thinks about the younger employees in the company like Josh. As a manager/employee team, they have to find a way to work with one another and realize that although there are generational differences, there are ways to communicate and get around that. Another issue is Josh as an entry-level employee over-stepping his manager to get to the head of the company with his ideas. Josh should feel comfortable with his manager/leader to speak directly to them and not feel they have to almost go behind their back to be heard. An important aspect of leadership is communication and listening skills. There is also the ethical issue of Josh going straight to the CEO and overstepping Sarah by doing so. Josh should have gone to Sarah first, after their marketing planning meeting to discuss his ideas further, rather than get angry sitting around with his friends and purposely go behind her back to speak with Mr. Smithstone directly on his way out of the office one night.
2. How would you describe Sarah’s leadership style?
I would describe Sarah’s leadership style as traditional. Sarah is about starting from the bottom and working your way up to the top of the company, in due time. Once you pay your dues, then you get rewarded. I think she really is trying to utilize the directions that HR has given to the managers, but she isn’t spending as much time doing so.
