Leaders as motivators
In this section of the handbook we will focus on leaders as motivators. It is essential for the team that they are guided by a savvy yet responsible individual that brings out the best in every member. Since day to day operations become somewhat routine it’s critical for leaders to act as coaches when managing staff. Thus, reminding them of the importance of accomplishing tasks. In addition, added tasks can exasperate team members that often feel neglected besides the feeling of being under paid. It is for that reason motivation becomes a necessary ingredient in achieving a successful cohesive working unit. In this section of the hand book we will examine various strategies that a manager can use to help motivate their team. Before moving further, we must define both terms leaders and motivation in part because of their interchangeably. Motivation- a term that refers to a process that elicits controls and sustains certain behaviors. Leader- is described as the process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task. Achieving peak team performance will depend on the mangers ability to communicate clearly with team members. As managers it is important to keep in mind the above definitions when addressing staff. In analyzing the expectancy theory, it is crucial for a manager to understand that before members are motivated. There are three basic concepts that need to be satisfied before motivation can take place. The expectancy theory focuses on rewarding those who contribute the most. In fact, since individuals are working towards a reward it is important to assure its value, ability to perform, and attainment. Let’s break down some of these concepts for better understanding, first the staff has to value the reward, the worth or attractiveness has to be there for staff member to comply with duties this is referred to as the valence.
