Discuss how Joe could address the importance of understanding how people form perceptions and make attributions about others with his employees. Communication between managers and employees is very effective and important. Effective communication techniques must be learned and does not happen automatically. “Effective leader communication can help followers acquire skills, raise their self-image, and also assist leadership practitioners in earning follower respect.” (Burns, 2010, para.41). There are different forms of communication that can help Joe address the importance of understanding the perceptions and attributes employees make about each other. Joe can use verbal, nonverbal and written forms to communicate to his employees, but he must decide and choose the best form of communication without trying to offend any of his employees. “Perception is the process by which the individual selects, organizes, interprets, and responds to information.”(Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p. 104). The way a person processes information is based on what is not necessarily reality, but the perception of reality. Every individual perceives a situation differently people will pay attention to some aspects of the environment and ignore the rest. “Attribution Process refers to the ways in which people come to understand the causes of their own and others’ behaviors.”(Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p. 119). Attribution plays an important role among employees and managers. Joe must attempt to understand why his employees may behave the way they do and try to make better sense of their situation.
Joe needs to take into consideration individual needs and differences as his employees may differ in culture, gender and ethnicity, but this uniqueness of individuals should not distract them from achieving their goal. By Joe understanding the importance of his employee’s self-efficacy, he can strive to help everyone, regardless of their individual differences. Evaluate which learning theory (either operant conditioning, social learning theory, or the learning theory you researched in Week 3) would be most appropriate for Joe to apply in this situation and explain why. The most appropriate theory for Joe to use in this situation is the operant conditioning. “Operant conditioning refers to a process by which individuals learn voluntary behavior.”(Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p. 134). Joe will have to provide an environment that will help with the learning process and that will promote desirable behavior by his employees. An effective leader will not try to change an employee’s beliefs or personalities, but try to focus on the observing an employee’s behavior and environmental conditions. In operant conditioning employees learn from the consequences of their behavior. An increase or decrease in an employee’s behavior can change frequently, based on the results. “The strength and frequency of operant conditioned behaviors are determined mainly by consequences.”(Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p. 134). “Contingencies of Reinforcement is the relationship between a behavior and the preceding and following environment events that influence that behavior.” (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p. 135). By Joe giving instructions to his employees in advance as to which behaviors are acceptable and which are not lets them know that there are consequences of such behaviors.
Joe needs to make sure he clearly specify is expectations, and have patience as time needs to be set aside to ensure his employees comprehend and make sure that his expectations have effective consequences. Joe needs to also asses which type of rewards and punishments will be effective among his employees.
