Leadership & Management •••

Introduction
Leadership is a concept that permeates several layers of our lives. A good leader often determines the success of a business, industry or even a country. However, what can leadership achieve without good management practices? In trying to better understand the relationship between management and leadership, this paper attempts to answer two fundamental questions:

Is there an essential difference between leadership and management? When should one manage and when should one lead?

To do this we first discuss the definitions of leadership and management and then move on to describing the differences between these two concepts. The work of John P. Kotter, Abraham Zaleznik and Warren Bennis serve as foundations for this analysis, as well as form the basis of the ABEA Model, a framework developed by this group to help clarify in what circumstances one should focus in using management or leadership skills. Leadership is about creating vision and strategy, communicating and setting direction and motivating action through aligning people....
