All of the greatest leaders have a bigger picture. They are visionary.
The American history has recorded many ups and downs time of its country. We have seen the nation, which is just a colony in the very beginning, developed into the richest and most powerful nation in the world. Some have said it is the result of people’s will and striving for the better nation. However, if there were not a person to help them see something they could not have seen, would this nation be what it is? So who is that person? The leader. What make George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and Abraham Lincoln to be one of those many greatest leaders? They had a common; it is their point of view. They all saw a bigger picture than anyone else. In other word, they are visionary. And they used their vision to bring this nation to the future, which means the great United States today. Just like John Scully said,” The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious.”
We all know George Washington is the “father of our country”. He was born on February 22,1732 and became the first president of The United States of America on April 30,1789. As Patrick Alain mentioned about George Washington in his article “ Leadership and 10 great leaders in the history” on Leadermagazine.com: “George Washington, known as the founding father of the United States of America, was the leader of the American Revolution and the first president of US. He was a true visionary whose vision has endured for more than 200 years. What made Washington great was his foresight, vision, strategic planning and his ability to lead people to success.” I strongly believe in this statement. Better than anyone else, he saw this nation could be free from Britain Because, the influence of G.Washington not only came from the time he was the president, but also from the time he was still the nation’s commander-in-chief. He saw that this country could be free from Britain. That explains why during the revolution war, his determination, the refusal to give up and leadership, helped him in changing many battle outcomes. In another hand, he had a deep vision which last long for 2 centuries. In Washington’s vision, by using federal power, a great and powerful nation could be built on republican lines. National government by George Washington involved in many activities like preserve liberty, improve infrastructure, open the western lands, promote commerce, found a permanent capital, reduce regional tensions and promote a spirit of American nationalism. If he did not have those visions, I believe this nation would not be the nation it should be.
A leader’s vision not just a simple look in one aspect. Another leader’s vision I am going to talk about is Thomas Jefferson. He was born in April 13, 1743 and known as one of the founding fathers. Jefferson is the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States. If George Washington’s vision about to set this nation free from outside threat, then Thomas Jefferson’s vision is about the rights of states and how this nation could be grew bigger. While everybody is satisfied with the recent government, Thomas Jefferson feared that tyranny could happen in any form and he wanted to protect the mind of man from it. Just like what he wrote in his private letter to Dr. Benjamin Rush-Monticello, Sep 23, 1800: "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." Based on what he did, we can see all of his work is to protect the rights of states. In his point of view, this country is too big for one central government to control. He believed the states have the rights like the federal. However, it was not his...
