The Aim
My aim is to do an observation of my target child who is 4:8 years old. I will be using the narrative technique to observe my target child to see if she is at her language development norm for a child of her age.
TC is walking over to the home corner. She is taking all the plastic food from the basket. She is telling A1 that she is going on a picnic. A1 is asking her where is she going on her picnic. TC is telling her that she is going to the beach. TC is making the burgers up putting the bread on the outside of the burgers. TC is handing it to A1 and telling her to eat it. A1 is pretending to eat it and is telling TC that it is nice.
A1 is giving it back to TC and she is putting it on the plate. TC is taking the pizza slices out of the basket and putting it on the plates. TC is saying to A1 that we need these pizza for the picnic. She is picking up the tomatoe sauce bottle and squeezing it onto the pizza slice, she is telling A1 to eat the pizza, TC then picks up a biscuit and is telling A1 to eat it. A1 is telling her that she is full. TC is saying to A1 “well you can finish it later if you are hungry”.
I am moving closer to the home corner and TC is saying “We are having a picnic, we have a beach towel”. A2 asks TC where is the beach towel, TC is saying that it is on the sand, she is putting it on the sand so that we can all sit down and have our picnic”. She is telling A1 to kneel down on the towel on the sand.
OC1 = another child TC = target ChildA1 = adult A2 = Adult 2
OC is walking into the home corner and heading straight for the toaster, TC is telling OC that she is making the toast for him, but OC is telling TC that he is making the toast for her, in the end OC is making the toast.
OC is telling TC that when the toast pops it ready, TC is telling the toaster to pop, “now the toast is ready”.
