The Scientific Method
Problem: Will a male or female have a higher heart rate after participating in the physical activity of running up three floors of a building? Both students are involved in sports that require physical activity. Hypothesis: We believe that the male would have a lower heart rate after running up the stairs determining that he is in better shape. Materials/Methods: The two students will both run up the same number of stairs and then have their hearts rates monitored for 15 seconds with a stop watch by two other students. They will repeat the process two more times. Results: The results of the experiment were that the male had an average heart rate higher than the female. Conclusion: Our hypothesis was incorrect based on the data collected from the experiment because the female had the lowest heart rate.

Intro: An ion is an atom or a molecule with unbalanced charges. Ionic compounds interact with compounds. An acid is a substance that releases H+ into a solution. A base is a substance that can remove H+ from a solution. Solutions can change color as a function of pH levels. Hypothesis: In this experiment we believe that red cabbage could be used as an indicator to measuring pH levels. Materials/Methods: We filled five test tubes with different substances such as Milk of Magnesia, water, soda, Ammonia and then a drop of cabbage extract into each tube. We then shook the tubes and covered them with parafilm and waited to see if a color change would occur in any of the substances. Results: Our results were that the substances like soda were determined to be acidic due to the indicator. Conclusion: Our hypothesis was correct because the red cabbage extract could be used as an indicator to determine the pH levels of certain substances.
