Lab Report
Abstract: This report presents the reason why the ocean does not freeze in the winter. Since the ocean consists of salt water, an experiment was done to test the effect of freezing on salt water compared to pure water. The experiment was conducted three times in order to obtain accurate results and eliminate errors. In addition to the salt and pure water experiment, a variation of this experiment was created to test other options. In the variation experiment the effect of freezing on sugar water was conducted.
Materials and Method: In order to set up the experiment, two 16 oz measuring cups were collected. One was labeled pure water and the other was labeled salt water. One cup of cold tap water was poured into both cups and two tablespoons of iodized table salt was dissolved in the cup labeled salt water. After that, both cups were placed in the freezer. Every 15 minutes, the state of the water in the cups were observed and recorded until the water in both cups froze. This experiment was conducted three times for accuracy with the same materials and method.
A variation of this experiment was then set up to test the effect of freezing on sugar water. The same two 16 oz measuring cups were used and one cup of cold tap water was poured in both cups. One cup was labeled pure water and the other was labeled sugar water. Then, two tablespoons of sugar was dissolved in the cup labeled sugar water. After that, both cups were placed in the freezer and the state of the water in both cups were observed and recorded every 15 minutes. This experiment was also conducted three times for accuracy with the same materials and method.

But, a mixture of 20% NaCl and liquid water will have a lower freezing point (2 degrees Fahrenheit) than a mixture of 10% NaCl and liquid water (4). The 20% solution will then melt the ice much faster (though it isn't practical)(4). The material that melts ice the fastest is the material that dissolves into the greatest number of particles in a solution of that material and liquid water(4). It is important to learn how fast ice melts in different liquids because the Earth is currently going through global. If someone was able to find a way to keep ice from melting then maybe they could find a way to keep the polar ice caps from melting. Which could keep various animals from going extinct. If I place the ice in each liquid when they are at room temperature then I think the ice will melt fastest in the saltwater. When I first thought about which liquid would melt the ice the fastest I originally thought it would be the Pepsi because of the carbonation. But when I did research I found that the saltwater actually melted the ice melt the fastest. Which is one of the main reasons salt is put down on the ground when there is snow or ice on the…

The overall goal of experiment four was to determine the identity of unknown cations presented to the student. But in order to know the identity of these unknowns, in part 1, Ag+, Pb+, and Hg22+ were presented to the student in aqueous solutions and then precipitated through experimentation. In part 2, the same procedure was enacted to determine which substances precipitated through qualitative analysis. Solubility rules were also a major theme as solubility is important in determining whether a reaction will produce a precipitate.…

To begin this experiment a water bath was assembled using a 100 mL beaker, and filling it half way with cool tap water. Then, crushed ice was placed in the remainder of the beaker just below the top. Salt was finally added to the beaker and the solution was stirred well. After, a test tube was filled with distilled water, and the temperature was recorded every 30 seconds until the temperature reading was steady for five consecutive 30…

First 10 minutes all the liquids are still not frozen. Second 10 minutes all of the liquids are starting to freeze around the edges. Third 10 minutes water is almost completely ice on the surface, Sprite is half ice on the surface and Mello Yello, Orange Fanta, Coca Cola are still just ice around the edges. Fourth 10 minutes water is almost fully frozen, Sprite is not quite completely frozen on the top, Coca Cola, Mello Yello, Orange Fanta are all slushy. Fifth 10 minutes water is really close to being completely frozen, Mello Yello, Coca Cola, Orange Fanta, and Sprite are all still slushy at the top. Sixth 10 minutes water is completely except a little bit in the middle, the other liquids were still not quite frozen. So with my experiment water was the fasten to freeze and Sprite came in second.…

The first task was a conservation of liquid. I had two identical cups filled with the same amount of water, and one empty cup that was shorter and wider than the other two cups. I asked each student if the water was equal in the two cups, if they said yes, then I poured one of the cups of water into the third cup, and if they said no I would add a little more water to one of the cups until the student thought it had an equal amount of water in each cup and then I would pour one of the cups of water into the third one. Next I asked each student which cup had more water, the third cup that I just poured water into or the first cup that I never touched that still had water in it.…

If one teaspoon of ammonium chloride, calcium chloride, and sodium chloride are added to separate glasses of water, then ammonium chloride will keep the water cold the longest because it is most commonly used in brand name cold packs. In order to test the hypothesis, the scientists will label four cups to keep track of what chemical will go in each cup. One will just be plain water, while the next will be labeled ammonium chloride, calcium chloride, etc. Then the scientists will pour fifty mL of water into each cup and measure the temperature of the water in each cup. The scientists will then add one teaspoon of each chemical into the corresponding cup.…
