Kudler Fine Foods is a food store located within the San Diego Metropolitan area. It has three locations at La Jolla, Del Mar, and Encinitas. Kathy Kudler founded the store after experiencing difficulties in gathering ingredients for gourmet dishes from different locations. Its vision is to bring together a wide collection of finest food products at one location at reasonable prices. Since June 1998 when it was established, it has chalked some successes and firmly established itself as people’s favorites. Like any fuller fledged store, it has all the required departments including finance and accounting, administration, sales and marketing, human resources, operations and Information Technology. This paper will focus on the Operations department; it will review the current system and also offer suggestions on how to improve the operations of the department to increase its performance and eventually the profitability of Kudler Fine Foods. It will draw on general purchasing knowledge / concepts from the internet in a manner compatible with that of Kudler Fine Foods. The paper will first take a short look at other sections of the operations department before dwelling heavily on the purchasing department.
Advertisements
Advertisements are done in the local newspapers and they are coordinated by Kate Kudler. Weekly special sale advertisements are carried for all three stores simultaneously with agreement from all three department store managers at the weekly meetings with Kate Kudler. During such meetings, stock levels for these specials are checked to ensure there is enough to meet the expected demand. Items are moved from one store to the other to ensure each has enough before the sale begins. Since sales are locally based, management has not found the need to advertise in other media apart from local newspapers; so far it had worked well for the company.
