Outcomes of the Korea War

In 1950, Truman administration responded quickly to the invasion to help South Korea to expanse American foreign policies and protect it. Since Truman was trying to avoid conflict with china, because he feared it might lead to a new world war. Truman’s response to the North Korean invasion in June 1950 wasn’t justified for he set in motion for the United States to fight against China. For bombing the North Korea, China pushed the United States forces back to South Korea showing China was stronger with their forces and would rule under communist. Some of the long terms effect in the Korea War families were torn apart. North Korea would suffer the effect of being ruled under the communism. They were limited on their freedoms. They were controlled so by they didn’t have the freedom of press, religion, or speech. There was little food in North Korea, so many people starved. South Korea has the freedom of press, religion, and speech. They aren’t ruled by a communist after the war so they were able to grow without limits.

According to document 5, the description written by Sook Nyul Choi in Korea between the end of WWII and 1950, Korea was actually a “victim country” for the Cold War that existed between the US and the USSR. This could be proven by the fact that people were affected negatively by these communist soldiers and weapons such as tanks and guns. The communist troops from both China and Russia not only threatened people which led to the Northern refugees to escape to Seoul, people who are “labeled” as traitors were shot with machine guns and hanged in the town square for other people to see as a bad example to not follow. Then looking at document 6a, the map shows the result of the Korean War from 1950-1953. North Korea and South Korea were being divided along the 38th parallel due to their difference in supporters and political views. These evidences shows how the Cold War made Korea into battlefields and by the Russians supporting communist in the north, and the Americans spreading capitalism in the south, this led to the Korean War. The war not only led to the division of Korea, it also caused millions of soldiers and civilians to lost lives and which destroyed the economy in both North and South…

The Korean War Memorial is a beautiful memorial in Washington D.C.’s West Potomac Park. It commemorates the 54,246 US soldiers who died in the Korean War. (American Battle Monuments Commission) The Korean War war was dedicated on July 27th 1995 by Bill Clinton and the President of the Republic of Korea, Kim Young Sam. It began construction on October 28th 1986 and President George H.W. Bush conducted the groundbreaking of the Memorial. (IBOV) The $18 million memorial had a massive delay because they debated over how the war should be represented/commemorated. (New York Times 1996) It's upsetting how we've forgotten about the deaths and how poorly the memorials funding has got, it is extremely unappreciated.…

This event was very important since this was “the actual” start of the war. “The new republic was only two years old when waves of North Korean troops invaded South Korea and swiftly occupied the capital of Seoul on June 25, 1950.” This was a very strategic move by the communist party because of its partner the USSR. “ So began the Korean War, which in several ways was a continuation of ideological disputes that had been active since the Japanese occupation. What started as a civil war quickly exploded into a superpower conflict when U.S.-led U.N. forces came to the aid of South Korea.” This quote summarizes the start of the Korean war and why North Korea wanted to take South Korea. Essentially, South Korea did not want to be under a communist government while North Korea really believed in the communism and its meaning general. As seen above this was described not as a war but as a war between ideologies at least in the North Korean’s point of view. In the end, this event and its back story is no match to Truman’s…

On September 15, 1950, during the Korean War, The United States Marines made an impossible amphibious landing at Incheon which is located on the west coast of Korea from Seoul. It was really risky landing but The United Nations Supreme Commander Douglas MacArthur force made the landing. After the landing, United Nations force was able to break North Korean soldiers lines. With the help of The United Nation, North Korean armies pushed away south to north so United Nation and South Korean troops recaptured Seoul that had fallen in June. The landing at Incheon changed the course of the war If General MacArthur didn’t try to land on Incheon, probably South Korea does not exist in the present and also communism dominates the entire…

Stalin wanted to test America’s commitment to their policies of containment so when they responded it showed that America was willing to continue stopping communism even 4 years after World War 2. When the United States waded into the muddy waters of battle they had one goal, contain communism and uphold the democratic state which was South Korea; and they did. The war shows again commitment to the cause and doing what is needed in order to fight off the USSR’s attempts to expand communist reign. Furthermore, the justifying quality of war was the end result. After the war ended, South Korea’s government system of democracy lived. For the U.S this was an embodiment of containment and the future seemingly boded in the side of the North Atlantic Treaty…

The invasion surprised the South Koreans. This advancement of the North Korean troops was considered the first military action in the Cold War. It was thought of a civil war at first. President Truman responded immediately by requesting the United Nations Security Council to intervene for the benefit of South Korea. The United States also responded by July with military troops to support South Korea in hopes that they could contain the threat and spreading of communism. The Truman Doctrine which was a policy that the United States put in place to support countries trying to free themselves of the communist threat became the rationale for the United States involvement. The United States feared that this invasion would provoke a wider war with Russia and China or possibly World War III. This idea was stated in the Domino effect theory because the theory stated if one area was influenced by communism then other areas would follow in a domino effect. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War ended with more than 5 million soldiers and civilians losing their lives. Unfortunately, the Korean peninsula is still divided…

Instead, each had dramatic advances and retreats pushing the opposition from one end of Korea to the other, eventually ending in a stalemate with both sides holding ground about the 38th Parallel. The war, however, was not solely contained in Korea and it had a large impact on both the capitalist and communist powers. Not only did it spread communism into Asia with the involvement of then communist China, it brought about the threat of a full nuclear attack between the two forces. Because of the successful spread of communism to China, the Americans felt this would cause a ‘Domino effect’ whereby the USSR would gradually turn more and more countries communist in a sort of cascade effect. The policy adopted by the then American president, Harry Truman, was to contain the spread of communism as much as possible and General Douglas MacArthur was tasked with the mission of keeping the communist forces in Korea at bay. However, as the war evolved it became increasingly difficult to gain an advance on the enemy. MacArthur then began to seriously contemplate using an Atomic bomb against the communists. If this course of action, as suggested by MacArthur, had been taken, we can be sure that not wanting to appear weaker, the USSR would have retaliated, using the Atomic bomb it had…
