Review of Related Literature
This chapter presents literature relevant to the study. It is divided into two main parts: (1) Gum diseases and (2) Summary.
Part One, Gum diseases, discusses the problems that your teeth are experiencing.
Part Two, Summary.
Gum diseases
Gum disease or also known, as periodontal disease is a common dental problem that may result in tooth loss (oral b-laboratories, 1997).
According to Cannistra (2002), gum disease refers to a group of problems that arise in the gum sulcus.
Gum diseases are gum and bone infections caused by the bacteria in the mouth (Simon, 2005).
Gum disease has two common stages. These were the gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is an inflamed and swollen gum. It is most commonly caused by plaque, a sticky deposit of mucus, food particles and bacteria that forms at the base of the teeth (Kunz, 1992).
The gingivitis has several types, namely, chronic gingivitis, hyperplastic gingivitis, hormonal gingivitis, desquamative gingivitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, acute recurrent gingivitis, allergic gingivitis (Bhaskar, 1986).
Periodontitis
According to Bhaskar (1986) periodontitis is an infection of underlying bone. It does cause the spacing between the teeth, mobility of teeth and also the receding of the teeth and discomfort. Unlike gingivitis it has bone loss.
Kunz(1982) stated that periodontitis does have different cases namely; adult periodontitis, prepubertal periodontitis, juvenile periodontitis, rapidly periodontitis, and acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivoperiodontitis.
Summary
Students do experience gum diseases, but sometimes they just ignore it. Gum disease has two kinds, which affect the health of the people.
