• The usage of air-conditioners in the school is extensive and wasteful.
• There are no written regulations concerning the usage of electricity.
• Students are not aware of the low electrical tariff set by the government and the cheap cost of electricity and do not question the school’s electricity bill.
• Students admit that they do not take much action to conserve electricity and often waste electricity at home.
• Students usually do not bother to turn off: o Switches along the school block corridor o Light switch in toilets o Air-conditioners and light switches in the classrooms and laboratories at the end of class.
• The latest SPN 21 Secondary Science syllabus does not contain the topic ‘The Importance of Saving Electricity’.
Energy conservation was taught but not specifically on electricity.
•Efforts in Energy Club do not involve all students and are more focused on awareness than action.

• Contractors to design schools that are more energy efficient.
• Only building companies that design schools that are energy efficient can be approved.
• Banks to approve loans to companies that design energy efficient schools.
• Air-conditioners out to be serviced regularly to maintain efficiency so less electricity is used. Inefficient air-conditioners ought to be replaced with new, efficient ones.
• Classrooms ought to use only ceiling fans and reserve air-conditioners for rooms that truly require it

! Another problem we encountered was with the ceiling lights. Most classes with the exception of the science labs have about 8 to 9 light fixtures, each with 3 individual bulbs. But the science classes are much bigger and on average, these classes have about 14 light fixtures. The problem with the science classes is that they are split into two sections, the lab stations and the actual classroom, however teachers only have the option to have no lights on at all, or all of the lights on even though only one side of the room is being used. This is an inefficient use of energy, and if we were able to install a separate light switch for the lab stations in the science classrooms then it would be a lot easier to control the unnecessary loss of energy. ! Teachers could also choose to have a floor or desk lamp for when they have planning periods. Instead of having all the lights on in an otherwise vacant room, teachers could use a lamp to work at their desk or grade papers. Some rooms also have access to windows and that is a good source of natural light that should be utilized whenever possible. ! The cost of implementing changes to reduce unnecessary energy consumption is small compared to the cost of paying a power bill for a high…

Every day people use electricity. We use it to power our phone, and televisions. We use electricity to get ourselves to where we need to be, but people don’t just use electricity to power the vain things in life. Some people can’t even see or hear without it. To some having electricity is the difference between life and death. Without electricity we wouldn’t have nearly as many medical advances as we do today all the people that rely on electric devices at hospitals would probably be dead.…

The invention of electricity, to many, can be considered one of the greatest inventions by humanity, behind writing and the wheel. From its first discovery in the 1600s till present day, electricity has fascinated the minds of scientist everywhere. Over time society has been established with a very high dependency on this commodity. Imagine our world today without electricity or any of the inventions derived from it. Modern societies would have taken a much different path. Last year the International Energy Agency conducted a survey on the energy statistics for over 30 of the more developed countries. Around 62 percent of the energy produced worldwide was created from combustible fuel source (Monthly Electricity Statistics). When combustible fuel is burned, carbon and other harmful byproducts are released into the atmosphere. This brings about environmental injustice since every living organism in contact with the atmosphere now suffers the consequences which the few benefit from. While I believe this is the more grave concern regarding electricity, the majority of the modernized world might not have an equivalent conclusion.…

Before completing this reflexive diary I would have considered myself fairly energy conscious. I would have still said I’m wasteful but I thought I was more aware than others. I thought I knew more about the environmental consequences of wasting energy than I did. Completing this diary really opened my eyes to the amount we all waste energy unnecessarily. Almost all of us don’t have a clue how much energy we consume. I had never thought about it as anything more than the lights and the heating at home and I’m sure many others are the same. As the week went on I started to realise more and more how much energy I alone was using in a day, then I began to notice how much my friends, family etc. consume and how much could be saved so easily. When thinking about the project I noticed how much the college could reduce its energy consumption simply by making the students and staff more aware and encouraging them to change. However, I also know that even though something like turning off a light when you leave the room is an easy task, it’s very hard to get people to even remember to always try to conserve energy. Convenience is also a big factor. Since finishing the diary I have been thinking that a plan could be made to educate the students and staff of the college on the reasons for energy conservation and showing them how much can be saved from doing so little.…
