When the fear of public speaking is present, it is overall easy to overcome. The article How to Conquer Public Speaking Fear, written by Morton C. Orman, M.D. explains how practicing the ten principles with practice can help you overcome public speaking fear. Principle 1 states that public speaking is not inherently stressful, although thousands of human beings have learned to speak without stress, I disagree that I’ll ever have the feeling of having little to no stress when it comes to public speaking. Principle 2 states that you don’t have to be brilliant or perfect to succeed. I agree with this principle because at the end of the day people are looking for something of value from your speech. Principle 3 explains how you only need two or…

It was my point of view on the death penalty, so naturally it was a touchy subject to begin with. The nature of the topic made it more difficult for me to execute (no pun intended) my speech. I walked up to the podium, fixed my papers, and started reading. The class was silent. It felt like I was reading for hours, but it took me only 10 minutes. At the end of the speech, my teacher asked for opinions and critiques. One boy said he agreed with my point of view. Another girl said, "I admired how passionate you were about what you were saying." That comment built up my non-existent confidence. It made me come to terms with my problem. I then made it my personal mission to find a solution to this problem, or maybe I was still stuck in my Geometry class from first period, who knows. We did more and more presentations, sometimes alone and sometimes with a partner. My public speaking teacher was also a Drama teacher, so she wanted to incorporate a little part of her Drama class. The assignment was to read a monologue and act it out. Now, public speaking was hard enough for me, but acting in front of people was on a whole different level. I managed to complete the monologue without having a panic attack, so that was a good sign. By the time the school year was over, I had gotten more confident in my presentations. I could talk in front of a class without resembling a tomato! Mission…

    Pharmacy Career

Finding a career within the pharmacy profession holds appeal for many reasons: a strong job market, high pay, work equality, divergent career opportunities and favorable working conditions in a profession that consistently ranks at the top in Gallup’s annual poll of most trusted professions. Careers all across the ever-evolving health care industry have seen consistent growth in demand over the last several years, with no projections for slowing down. Pharmacists can look forward to higher than average employment opportunities. The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), projects a 25% growth in demand through 2020. This increase is attributed to an ageing population, advances in medicine, increased number of people with insurance coverage and the expanding role of pharmacists in patient care. Additionally, pharmacy students have the envious distinction of a nearly 100% job placement in their career field within a year of graduation. Another appealing aspect of the profession is pharmacists enjoy a relatively high median salary. In the most recent statistics published by the BLS, the median wage is nearly $115,000 per year. Earning potential is projected to continue to rise due to the predicted high growth in jobs, without a corresponding increase in the number of graduates entering the profession. When it comes to work equality, careers in pharmacy continue to top the charts. With women making up nearly two-thirds of the pharmacy profession, the pay gap between men and women has nearly been eliminated. In a 2012 article published in Forbes, pharmacy was listed as the number one best-paying job for women. The pharmacy profession opens the door for numerous career opportunities across widely diverse employment settings. In a pharmacist career guide published by Pfizer, there are no less than 28 unique practice areas described. They range…

    Speech Tips

I hate being nervous when speaking. I would make sure that I had an ample supply of water available to soothe my ever-drying mouth; I would make sure that I had a portable microphone so I could walk around to minimize nervous energy. I would know my material like the back of my hand, by doing so I will come across as professional. I would arrive early to the location to where I am giving the speech. I will arrive early and walk around the room including the speaking area. I could stand at the lectern speak into the microphone; maybe walk around where the audience will be getting a feel for the room. If possible, I would greet some of the audience as they arrive and chat with them. It is easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers. Choose one member of my audience and dedicate my whole presentation to him or her. Just assume that not everyone else is paying attention. When someone asks me a question, change your focus to that person and answer the question as if the two of you are in a coffee shop chatting away. Isn’t that the most relaxing way to handle a crowd? I think these are some good ideas to get over being nervous. I scored higher than I thought I would, I know paying attention in a meeting or at a conference is rather easy but sometimes, the most insignificant things can distract me. I have seen many excellent speakers on the TED talks. A good speaker makes a considerable difference when someone is passing on a good amount of good quality information. I know if a speaker is not prepared and has a hard time, getting his point across, I can really become distracted or even uninterested. I remember learning how to be a better listener when I was in Boot Camp. The drill instructors really reinforced their techniques to make sure each series of Marines learned exactly what it was to become better than the class before you. Those methods would seem harsh and barbaric to those who would be looking from the outside but at the time, it made…

Later on we were asked to do the rehearsals as many times as possible before second video recording session. We rehearsed for 12 times to count the time and to check preparation level. Initial days we rehearsed for 60 minutes. As days were passing we had increased the duration of the speech from 60 seconds to 75 seconds,75 seconds to 90 seconds and later moved to 90 seconds to 120 seconds. We have filled the public speaking rubric form once in every alternative days when we had finished our practice. During rehearsals initially I thought my problem was speech appendages. But after rehearsals I found out the real weaknesses other than fillers which are long pauses, lower confidence levels in public speaking, nervousness. With the advice of team members worked on my weaknesses and reduced some of the mistakes through continuous rehearsals. It helped to improve my confidence levels , how to make draft so that long pause weakness can be minimized. In addition to that I improved my interpersonal skills.…
