Why Edward 1st was successful in his conquest of Wales?
King Edward the 1st and Llywelyn ap Gruffydd went to war with each other in 1277. Edward the 1st died in 1307 and still managed to conquer Wales. However it was not until 1282 that Edward the 1st took over Wales completely. This essay will explain why Edward the 1st was successful in his conquest of Wales. The main reason Edward won the battle was because of his military skills, tactics and experience. His ability to maintain control and the Failings of the Welsh was also important but not as important. Edward the 1st was the son of King Henry the 3rd. Edward was born in June 1239 at Westminster. In 1254 he married Eleanor of Castile. Edward’s early adulthood took place against a backdrop of civil strife between his father and rebel barons. Edward as himself held captive by rebel leader Simon de Montfort before escaping and leading royalist forces to victory at the Battle of Evesham in August 1265, where de Montfort was killed. In 1270, Edward left England to join the Eighth Crusade. Edwards’s father died in 1274. Edward invaded in 1277, defeated the Welsh leader (Llywelyn ap Gruffydd) and built a ring of castles to enforce his authority. In 1282 Llywelyn ap Gruffydd was killed in battle and his brother Dafydd was executed, ending Welsh hopes of independence. In 1301 King Edward the 1st made his son Prince of Wales. Edward was on his way to fight Bruce when he died on the 7th of July 1307. The reason why King Edward the 1st was successful in his conquest of Wales was because of his military skills, tactics and experience. These came in handy when Edward he fought against Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (Prince of Wales) in 1277. Edward the 1st was very brave and ruthless this came from fighting alongside his father in wars.
