THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND
Kid vendors are children from 5 to 12 years old who sell goods or offer something for sale. Quiapo is a district and primary city square in Manila. In the Philippines, one of every six children is working illegally. (http://wikipedia.org) This practice is considered as exploitative and illegal in the Philippines as it is in different international organizations. Underage children are compelled to manual labor in order to help their families. This example of child labor is one of many concerns in the Philippines and, most disturbingly, one of the most rampant problems we face. Every child has the right to the most basic of necessities in life like a healthy environment, formal education and most importantly, a loving family to come home to. Yet, poverty hinders the children to any of these things and forces them to peddle the streets and sell goods to earn a living. According to the 2011 survey on children conduction by the National Statistics Office (NSO), about 5.59 out of 29.019 million children are already working. (Philippine Daily Inquirer) The fact that these millions of children who are supposed to be in the environment of a classroom are roaming the busy and dangerous streets of the country is very alarming. It is for this reason that the researcher is interested in taking a more serious look into the issue and in the endeavor to create an awareness of an already existing law that is evidently not properly implemented, this research started.
Statement of the Problem
This study was undertaken to find out the profile of the kid vendors in Quiapo Manila. Specifically, this study sought answers to the following research questions: 1. What age group do most of the respondents belong in?
2. What goods do they sell?
3. Where do they usually sell goods?
4. How many hours do they work?
Scope and Limitations
This study looked into the profile of the kid vendors ages 5 to 12 years old in Quiapo Manila as well as the things about their work. No attempt was made to conduct a study to neither any other places nor any other age group.
