1. Stimulus generalization transfer a response learned to one stimulus to a similar stimulus. The benefit of stimulus generalization outweighs the disadvantage in strategic marketing.

In the market today buyers consider perceptions, needs, product loyalty, age and income when purchasing a product. Stimulus generalization allows the market to offer new products with new benefits into an existing brand name product. Thus consumers can have several options to choose from, but some consumers are confused because there are so many different products. Some consumers like to stick to the same brand, some like to try something new and some will experiment from time to time.

The advantage is being able to make new products such as: mouthwash, different flavored toothpaste, whiting strip and many more. Some of the disadvantages it has are so many brands and choices to choose from which consumers are not sure what to buy. It is better that there are so many options, but consumer are not sure what products are the best and then they have to purchase the product to find out the results. Normally most people will stick to the products that they are used to buy because they know those are going to satisfy their primary needs.

For this reason, the identity of a particular product in the line should be made to stand out from the rest. It is important to note that product differentiation lies in the mind of the consumer. In fact, two products may be identical, but are presented in such a way that one is superior to the other. In order to create such distinctions, firms have created image differentiation based on branding. Differentiation strategies allow for products to command brand loyalty and a corresponding reduction in price sensitivity. Brands are of increasing worth since they are intangible assets that are difficult for competitors to understand and…

Another concern for Colgate-Palmolive was the pricing strategy that was created for the Wisp. A quick scan at the local store for the prices of reusable toothbrushes averaged $2.50 and the cost of a tube of toothpaste averaged $3.00 and these products would probably last 2 people 3-4 weeks. The price for the Wisp retails at $7.99 for a 16-pack of disposable one-use Wisp’s which made it more costly to use the Wisp for consumers. Other companies have tried selling a disposable toothbrush but were unsuccessful after not realizing a return on investment(ROI), in fact after Procter & Gamble failed miserably in 2004, they ceased to continue marketing a disposable toothbrush. Also if the Wisp were to become a success, it wouldn’t take long until the other manufacturers began marketing similar products, which would have further cut into the Colgate-Palmolive market share.…

There are some obvious advantages of brand extension which are to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of promotional expenditures. To launch a product using an existing brand name can avoid employing professional designer to create brand names, logos, packages etc. Similar packages and labels can decrease the production costs as well. These costs used to be a large amount of money. Also similar packages help to create a “billboard” effect in retail shops which means stocking some identical or similar packaging products together can increase their visibility, like Campbell soup. Besides, there was a research on 98 consumer brands in 11 markets, it found that sub brand spent much less on advertising than other new brand name product. (Mary W. Sullivan, June 1992). It is because there are more products using the same brand name, which would easily attract more people attentions, and even one…

Colgate’s competitive advantage had been its association with whiter teeth: its whitening toothpaste had been the number one seller in the market. Now, not only had Procter and Gamble released a superior product for whitening, but the heavy capital investment in research and development had allowed for a scientific way to quantify the change that had held up against the NAD (Exhibit 4) and Would hold up against the Lanham Act (Exhibit 6). Based on the results of the concept test, an important move would consist of correcting public opinion regarding the potency of Simply White via mass advertising. This was easily doable as Procter and Gamble already had relationships with channels due to the high amount of past advertising.…

Pepsodent was a very popular brand before the mid-1950s, but its makers were slow to add fluoride to its formula to counter the rise of other highly promoted brands such as Crest and Gleem toothpaste by Procter & Gamble, and Colgate's eponymous product; sales of Pepsodent plummeted. Today Pepsodent is a “value brand” marketed primarily in discount stores and retails for roughly half the price of similarly-sized tubes of Crest or of Colgate.…

Stimulus generalization is the procedure of reinforcing a response in the presence of a stimulus or situation, and the effect of the response becoming more probable in the presence of another stimulus or situation. Basically, a person responds the same way to two different stimuli. An example of this would be: a child seeing a black cat and calling it a cat, then seeing a black dog and calling it a cat as well.…
