Nik imagined that his new position with M-Theory would send him to the island “paradise” of Kava, but upon arrival, what he found was far from how he imagined it would be. After being briefed by Alex about the plethora of natural disasters, disease, and other negative facets, Nik was questioning the purpose of his and his employer’s mission. Despite the initial frustration with the conditions on the island, he forced himself to carry on with mission and assignment that were prescribed to him. He has been working diligently to carry out the necessary research on the island and analyze the possibility of M-Theory Group increasing its presence on the island.
The significant potential for natural disasters on Kava poses substantial risks to any business operating within the island. There is little M-Theory can do to mitigate these impacts other than try to account for realistic potentials based on historical data. The threats also pose real danger to the health of the people of Kava. The natural disasters could significantly affect the health of the population, especially if access to affordable healthcare and medical supplies became limited. The threats from AIDS/HIV alone is substantial, but it can be mitigated if we request that the government institute educational programs and at the same time, make contraceptives accessible to the general public.
Nik will need to be objective in identifying all the possible sources of costs and benefits to clearly analyze the potential of the company presence in Kava. The process of carrying out the cost benefit analysis (CBA) generally is not a complex process but finding and identifying valuable information could be pretty challenging. The cost and benefit analysis may provide sufficient economic value at the time of calculation based on the available costs and benefits information but may not be good in providing summary of long-term economic sufficiency (Carlin, 2005).
