Concert paper: Dancing away On May 9th I went to my first dance concert in South Western College. I have never been to one and even though it was a requirement to go, I actually enjoyed it very well. I don’t regret going at all. All the dances were really nice and there were two dances that really moved me and touched me that it made me cry a little. The one that made me sad was Dear Monica. That one was too cute, all the choreography and even the costumes fit very well with the theme of the song and what they were trying to tell us. But I was mad Monica did not end up with the nice guy, instead she chose the bad guy. Her decision made me want to go up the stage and comfort the nice guy because he was all alone Also, Just Close Your Eyes was one of the ones that really made me cry. Just the story of the dance was very sad. I have never really seen anything like it, it was really creative. It really moved the audience though, because once they realized the male dancer was a ghost, I could hear everyone all shocked. It was just something really unexpected which I loved. All the dances in the concert were beautiful and I liked how they were not just about one specific dance. It was varied from hip hop to Latin, which are my two favorite types of dances. Which by the way the dance Victim of Love was beautiful and really entertaining. Erik Berumen and Monica Ortiz did a really good job choreographing this piece and also did an excellent job in the music choices. I loved how the dancers danced to all my favorite artists. Once I heard Romeo’s voice, from the Bachata music group Aventura, I was melting. I think I was the loudest person yelling of excitement. The costumes also in all the dances were really nice. Each one of the dances did a really good job in putting the costumes together because it fit their pieces. In Dreams of Reality I liked how they used a lot of popping in the Skrillex song and also it was really creative

Upon arrival, the teacher of the day, Stepahnie, told us she choreographed a dance to Hallelujah, by Jeff Buckley. She had been inspired by Mia Michael's routine on the previous night's episode of So You Think You Can Dance. Since I had watched the episode, I knew the exact song and dance she was talking about. It was a beautiful song and heart-wrenching routine. It had not only brought tears to my eyes, but also to the judges. I couldn't be more excited to be there and learn a beautiful dance. What I hadn't thought of is how this dance would affect me.…

The first piece Slavic Dance was up beat and exciting and it brought the audience into the show. I heard the piece and thought to myself ok the show has now begun. I think it is a good idea no matter what kind of performance it is, the start should be exciting and welcoming. The second piece, Three Preludes, was very clam and relaxing to the ears. At some points the song did get louder but sill had a nice legato feel throughout. La puerta del vino, was the third piece and was even quieter than the last, it sounded like a mystery piece. When a song is quiet and soft it make the audience listen harder because you do not want to miss it. The fourth piece was another duet and was up beat and woke everyone up from the short "nap" of quiet and softness form the last two-piece. The next piece Lisle Joyous L. 106 was similar to the last piece but wasn't as quick moving. Souvenirs was the second to last piece and was not only great but was fun to watch because the way it is written the performance are constantly getting their hands mixed up. The last piece was almost the same as the opening song but just a different section from it. I really like it because it was fast, fun, and very articulate. It had a lot a repeats or similar phrases so after a while you felt as if you know the song and could hum along with it. Not only is it good to open on a quick,…

The music was by The Weekend. I really enjoyed this performance. The performance was chilling, I could really convey that the dancers put their absolute all in this performance. As the dancers danced I felt as they were telling the story that the artist of the song was telling. This performance was one of my favorites of the night. Disordered Links was choreographed by Demetrius Shields and the music was by Kramer and the Machine. This performance was a mixture of hip-hop style and modern style. This performance was also thought-provoking, meaning my only focus was that stage in which the dancers resided.…

I loved the way the man effortlessly leaped about the stage. It seemed as if all he did was effortless yet beautiful, and I was able to easily understand what he was trying to convey. My least favorite piece was “When We Fly”. I was able to understand that the dancers were attempting to portray birds, but I felt it was slightly jumpy; as one dancer would leave the stage, another would come back with enough time for an awkward moment to pass. There were many solos and group parts, and though it was interesting, I felt it was a little choppy and in that, it made me uncomfortable to…

I was very impressed with the acrobatics and choreography which showed great dedication on the company’s part. With my experience in Avenue Q, I know how much time and work it takes to even learn and perfect a simple dance, so I would really like to appreciate and recognize the dedication and hard work of the actors and choreography of the company. I think those elements must have been a big part of the director’s vision and that the director must…

I enjoyed the play because the story and music is very interesting, unique and entertaining. I have seen the play before in Las Vegas and I must say that the cast in Las Vegas was much better than the one I saw on Thursday night. The reason is because it went more in-depth with the story and also played every single hit that the band had made. Also, the singers in Las Vegas were much more professional and sounded better because the actor portraying Frankie Valli did not have such a high pitched voice as the one in Curran Theatre. My favorite composition from the band was Beggin because the tempo and beat was so fast-paced and it was impressive how the band had bright stage lights and fascinating dance moves. The music contained catchy rhythms and beats. Some notes would stretch out to make a nice vocal sound and some were just quick beats from the drums. The staging was very flashy because they had different stage lights with different colors for each part of the story. The costumes were very well suited. They actors wore fancy suits and some had a fancy top hot to match their costume. I thought the the whole play went fairly well and the audience seemed to really enjoy it. The music was pleasant and relaxing, the actors were spot on with no mistakes during the show and the crowd was very enthusiastic. The only part I had a slight…

    Salsa Jazz Concert Report

It’s not really the type of concert I would have typically gone to for fun but I did enjoy myself. I think the fact that it was salsa made it more interesting since I am Hispanic. I caught myself bobbing my head to the rhythm, clapping my hands, and tapping my foot in some of the performances. One of my friends was in the concert so it was nice to see him play on the drums and how he had a solo. Also another guy from my jazz class was in the concert and he played very well and it was riveting to see the way he played his solo on the sax. I don’t know if I would ever go to another jazz concert for fun but who knows maybe I would if it was a salsa one. I am glad that I got to go and see this because I probably would not have experienced this if it wasn’t because I had to. It did open up my eyes more to the world of jazz and seeing how different it is to see them playing live than from a computer or just listening to the songs. To see it all happening was fascinating. I would tell anyone that they should go some time in their life to a jazz concert, specifically a salsa one. If I out of everyone enjoyed it than anyone…

    Balanchine's Prodigal Son

I did like most of the ballet, particularly the portrayal of the male lead – very strong and evidently spoilt in the first scene (his beating his hands on his thighs when he was not getting what he wanted) to the almost foetal being he becomes in the end scene. I liked the Siren and her almost dancing a Pas de Deux with her cape. I particularly liked the imagery of the table being turned and the son sliding down the slippery slope. I found the presence of the ensemble at times confusing, such as when they seemed to turn into crabs when the son was left completely without possessions.…

Overall, I feel that attending this concert made me more aware of the diversity of style. I enjoyed the many different sounds that this orchestra performed. I also enjoyed the dramatic tension I and the vibe that was given in the pieces . But mostly what I enjoyed the most of this whole performance was the second to last piece that was played. The way that the saxophone was played opened my ears to a new sound that I never heard. For this being the first concert that I have attended I can honestly say that this was a great…

The Christmas music was played very well and conveyed the happy times of Christmas. They played in many different styles which really showed how versatile their band is. I really enjoyed seeing a grown-up group where they are not professional musicians. It opened up my eyes to other people that enjoy playing music without it being all they do. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and thought that it was a success.…

    Music and Concert

All the pieces featured at this concert were major. I was able to figure this out using the knowledge I gained from class because all the pieces were very upbeat and had a happy feeling to them. My favorite piece was Fantasy of American Sailing Songs, this piece was very uplifting and the band performed it to perfection. I was amazed at the way they all played together and it sounded as though they had been performing together for a very long time. What amazes me most about these concerts is how the musicians perfect every little part of the song and that every single person playing an instrument is vital to the piece as a whole. Until these instrumentalists can play as one and unless they are on the same page their performance will not be as fascinating. Another aspect that I really enjoyed was the composers hand movements and I tried to pick up where he was using the hand movements we practiced in class. It was amazing to me the amount of energy and passion the composer puts into his work and it really seems as though he has immersed himself into the music.…

    Dance Critique

The dance performance that I watched was by the San Diego Dance Theater, Library Dances. The dance was taken place at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. There were 3 different dances during the event. The two dances that were choreographed by Jean Isaacs were “Two Forms” and “Water Lilies”. She is also the founder of San Diego Dance Theater. The other dance “Blot” was from a young choreographer’s showcase named Gina Bolles-Soresnsen. The dance occurred at a library, which was very intriguing and exciting. Libraries tend to not have a lot of art displayed. It was a first and definitely a good change to see dances being performed at a library. There was a very huge crowd watching the dances. I was very surprised and thrilled to see how many people still appreciate art in the form of dance. I saw all different kinds of people, children, old people younger people who watched the performances. It gave me hope that art is not dead and is still alive and thriving amongst all crowds. The audience including me was very welcomed by Jean Isaacs herself. She gave us a brief summary of her experience, her company and her dancers. It gave me a good idea what to expect and learn from the dance performance I was about to watch. I greatly admired the dancers’ bodies that moved freely and openly to the audience. It felt as if they were trying to send a message across. I was very surprised how different it is watching a dance on YouTube and watching it live. I can feel the dancers’ emotions and feelings through live dance that I cannot achieve watching online or on video. All three dances were very unique and had its own meaning and feeling to it. As each dance was performed, I saw myself changing emotions from one dance to another. The change of moods, gave a very great and energizing performance. Overall, I was very intrigued and amazed with the dance performances that day. It was not easy to depict their meaning but surely I did enjoy their dance a lot. It left…

The dance performance that I chose and went to see was Thunderbird American Indian Dancers. I chose this performance, because of my interest in the Native American culture and deep history in this country. Interestingly, dancing is an important art form in their culture with many stories that go along with them. Nonetheless, this was a performance I exceedingly enjoyed and would see again.…
